You can never truly answer this question because we are operating with the benefit of hindsight, so obviuosly everyone will compare the best players from those draft years as opposed to the player's rank during those years. For example, we could have made the Curry trade and still have gotten Bynum and Jarret Jack, so the fact that we gave up picks was not the whole issue. It was the fact that we drafted Frye instead of Bynum. But we did pickup Lee. This team could have been made up of Roy, Aldridge, Bynum, Jack, and Lee right now. Given Portland's record, I would have to say that would be a pretty solid team. However, I am more concerned with whether we can get Derrick Rose this year. He would be a solid start to rebuilding.
That's not true because a lot of people here were wanting those players at the time of the draft, it wasn't hindsight.
Bynum and Granger were talked about ahead of Frye.
Jack was mentioned ahead of Nate.
Marcus Williams was mentioned ahead of Mardy with Balkman available with the later pick.
Roy and Gay were mentioned as players that would have filled obvious needs.
There is zero doubt that this team would have been much better off if they had kept their first rd picks instead of trading them away for 2 fake franchise players in Marbury and Curry and using the ones they had on better players.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System
