Isiah violates Dolan's sacred media policy Isiah Thomas violated Madison Square Garden’s media policy on Monday night after his team violated every basic principle of basketball. Although Thomas failed to accept responsibility for the Knicks sorry effort - surprise, surprise - he did say that the team failed to play with heart and courage after the Knicks were humiliated 119-92 by Indiana. For a guy who last week said his team needed a group hug and not a scolding, that’s a fairly critical observation. It is also the type of thing that can get Isiah in hot water with his boss. Losing is one thing. But violating the James Dolan’s sacred media policy usually gets you a one way ticket out of town. Just ask Latrell Sprewell, Marcus Camby and of course, Larry Brown, who violated the media policy with both humor and solid analysis. On the VMP scale (Violating Media Policy) I would give Isiah a five out of 10. If given time, I believe he could improve to an eight. But the only way he’ll score a perfect 10 is if Thomas borrows some of Brown’s material. After Monday, Brown would have first blamed himself saying, “I just got to do a better job coaching them. If you’re going to blame anyone blame me. We need to improve because it would be good for our league.” I know this is a difficult step for Isiah because he has never blamed himself for anything. First it was Scott Layden’s fault, followed by Don Chaney, Allan Houston, Lenny Wilkens, Brown, Stephon Marbury, global warming, Guliani, and A-Rod. So if Thomas isn’t ready to assign blame to himself, he could at least take a few subtle shots at his players. Here is how Brown would have handled Monday’s post-game press conference: “I look at their point guard and I thought he was special. They look like they’re scripting plays. He calls a play and they run the play. We don’t recognize score, time and clock. We play like we don’t have a head out there. “I thought Dunleavy was special even though he went to Duke. You know, I coached his father once. It’s nice to see a small forward that can score and plays like he cares. “I’m happy Jermaine is healthy. I went into their locker room after the game and told him, “you play the way a big man should play. You rebound, block shots, pass.” Those of the types of comments that got Brown fired and earned him an $18 million parachute. The 59 losses didn’t even matter to Dolan. Isiah may want to remember that at his next post-game press conference. |
