I haven't watched the Knicks play on TV since last season. If you watch the game on TV, you technically are paying the Knicks as they collect some advertising revenues through MSG Network or in the revenue plans with ABC, ESPN, and TNT. The last time I directly funded the Garden was two seasons ago.
The only games I watch are on NBA league pass. I don't think the Knicks would collect money from that, especially if you're not participating in any Nielsen surveys.
You watch the team's channels. Also, the advertising that is being collected gets distributed to the teams. James Dolan writes checks, so he can collect certain checks later. The NBA likely collects some of your league pass, but so do all the other teams. The fact that you watch the regional channels from league pass means the Garden collects more in advertising fees. The more people that watch the more they can charge. In your monthly fee, a cut of that gets redistributed to the Knicks.
