Bulls Waive Gardner, Claim Demetris Nichols
December 7, 2007 - 5:23 pm
RealGM Staff Report -
The Chicago Bulls announced today that the team has waived guard Thomas Gardner. In a subsequent move, the team also announced that it has picked up forward Demetris Nichols on waivers.

Gardner (6-5, 225), an undrafted rookie out of the University of Missouri, appeared in four games with the Bulls this season and averaged 5.3 ppg (9-23 FG) and 1.0 rpg in 11.3 mpg. He shot .391 from the field and .250 from behind the arc. Gardner signed with Chicago prior to training camp on Oct. 1.

Nichols (6-8, 215) comes to Chicago after spending time with New York and Cleveland earlier this season. In three games this year, he has scored two points and grabbed one rebound in 14 minutes. Originally selected by Portland in the second round (53rd selection) of NBA Draft 2007, Nichols enjoyed a four-year collegiate career at Syracuse where he averaged 10.9 ppg, 4.1 rpg and 1.1 apg.

Nichols will join the team tomorrow when the Bulls host the Boston Celtics . With his signing, Chicago’s roster now stands at 15

One dimensional? He can shoot, he can play D.
Remember Hollinger's "Finding a Unicorn" article?
How many dimensions does Malik Rose have?
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Dude. I repeat, very sad.

You can like Isiah, but let's not make up ridiculous attacks at other players just to show your frustration at the fact that our team stinks.

What are you talking about? Are you O.K.?

I've been watching Nichols in Cuse, Sumer League, Pre-Season and some of the games he played in CLE (Most notable the game against Boston on sunday). I watched his game and it is based on spot up shooting. He is not a good defender, he is not good at putting the ball on the floor, not really a good rebounder, etc. What do you want me to say, he is nice because some of you guys overrated him?

Give me a freaking break.

i have to say, i was wrong about Fred Jones... i've liked the way he's played this year... the guy i'm upset over having on this team is Jared Jefferies... i really wish he'd have been bought out & we'd play Wilson Chandler more & had a roster spot to keep D Nichols.
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

What evidence do you have that he is bad on D? He is a huge guard with a long wingspan and looked great on D in the Summer League. His weakness is his ball handling. I would hope that a decent coach could fix that.

Nate is our best three point shooter. We can't have a 5'5" dude be our best three point shooter.

It was a bad move dropping him. There's no arguing that.

Im not saying we couldn't have use him because we defiently could have use his spot up shooting from put the post, but to answer your question, from watching him at cuse and seeing him in the other games he played summer league (BTW he did not look all that great on D in the summer league), Cavs, etc I can go off the fact that he is not a good man to man defender, he is not good at helping out, he loses concentration on D, he is not a strong defender, he doesnt play the passing lanes well, doesn't get back to his man on time from the kick outs. He is athletic enough to defend but the other aspects apply.

As you pointed out he cant dribble, which prevents him from putting it on the floor, not a strong rebounder and not strong in the lower box to box out.

As I said he is overrated but there is no doubt that he can improve, but he have yet to show me that.

I don't know CDB, Boeheim said that last year's team was his best defensive team ever. I'd just like to have a pure shooter that can play some D rather than all the streak shooters we have.

I love Nate and how he can stroke it from the outside, but it would be good to have a player who could shoot it in a normal halfcourt set. You'd have to be tall to do that.

I guess I envision team that is big, physical, defensive minded on the perimeter and shoots a high percentage. That would be a team of Marty, Nichols, Chandler, Zach and Curry.

Doesn't look like that's going to happen.

CDB, all I can say is you're stretching. To knock a player of which you are CLEARLY wrong about is the kind of stuff that makes a tough read. We all know Nichols was good on D especially in summer league. He certainly is a better defender than Crawford, Marbury, Nate, etc... so he could've helped in that area. Why all the hatred for Nichols who has barely gotten a shot.

And no, the Trailblazers do not count as a team since he never played with them; he was traded too soon. That doesn't really count.
