If there's one thing that Berman is the expert on, its the Marbury clan, so I'll believe him when he says it was his sister that gave the order not to tell Steph. Hopefully this puts it to bed:

Knicks had no choice
By MARC BERMAN

It was appalling to read published opinions that the Knicks brass did a heinous thing the other night at the Garden by not telling Stephon about his father being taken to the hospital at the end of halftime.
They had no choice.

Knicks P.R. man Jonathan Supranowitz got strict orders from Marbury's sister, Marcia, not to say anything because he's had chest pains before. Because Donald had hypertension, the family thought the worst at those times and, thankfully, the episodes were false alarms. Marcia is the leader of the Marbury clan and Stephon's business manager. How could they go against the sister's wishes, especially with everyone praying it was another false alarm. The Knicks had no choice.

It is sad that Marcia had to read about being second-guessed yesterday as she grieves. Very sad. And the club didn't find out Donald had died in the hospital until moments after the final buzzer.
Marbury found out two minutes later.

I'm glad we can stop talking about this. I cant wait for the day that we can talk about winning basketball with this franchise and not the constant circus this team always seems to be involved with.

I guess we can now stop the instant blame-game vs. MSG on this topic.

No way should MSG be trying to overrule the orders of Marbury's sister by telling Marbury during the game. And indeed, they did not know until the game was finished.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

I am back and forth on this. There are adults working at MSG who should have a brain. They shouldn't instantly hire Marbury's cousins at the request of Marbury OR his manager, and I do think they should take their own counsel on how to approach someone amongst their own greater family about a serious family matter at hand.

Hiring cousins is one matter that I don't think is related. However, respecting the wishes of a family member during a death, especially a person as close as Marbury's sister and Don Marbury's daughter is entirely different.

If the report is true, they did the right thing. Just imagine the spin if MSG had told Marbury during the game against his sister's orders!

I gotto side with Oohah on this one, and gladly. It definitely would have been pretty putrid had the rumor been true, but it's definitely good this was the case, and the Knicks were right to follow the orders of the family. It's personal business, and the Knicks shouldn't interfere with that, and by interfering, the Knicks cross a barrier of trust that's not meant to cross, and that hurts ALL credibility, if they even have any left.

Plus, if it's true that they didn't know about his death until after the buzzer, then the point is mute, considering he's had these false alarms before. From what people are saying, nobody had a clue he was gonna die.

If ANYTHING, Marbury's sister should be criticized for deciding to keep Marbury out of this by letting him play the game. Definitely unwarranted in my eyes.

I believed the order came from a family member, and until we hear an uproar from Steph's family I will assume this article to close the matter.

If it's true that a family member told MSG not to tell Steph (which is the only scenario that makes sense) then I think even the harshest MSG critic (of which I include myself) has to realize they are in a "damed if they do, damned if they don't" scenario at best.

I still cannot understand why completing the game for Steph was so important.
Even if this was false alarm it's just one game, just one regular working day for Steph in 10 years.
Quite stupid for his sister to do this but hay... not all people are smart and sharp to make correct decisions in this kind of situations.
It is good that MSG is not guilty party in this case.

Nobody is a guilty party. Steph's sister showed horrible judgement though, if it was in fact her decision. Now Stephon and his family needs to healthemselves, and HOPEFULLY, Steph isn't just rushing into things tonight. Not everybody is Brett Farvre, and nor should they have to be because different people handle things differently.

With that said, I STILL think it's best that Steph and the Knicks part ways.

I would be pretty upset with my sister if she pulled something like this. Really you keep this from Steph for what so he can finish out another losing game. Then again I don't know their family but still I think its pretty ****ty thing for the sister to do. I cann't imagine a child not wanting to spend those last moments with a parent.

I'd feel degraded and feel almost outcasted if it happened to me. I'd feel like a child. I too agree that Steph's sister has a lot of nerve, if it was in fact, her decision.

There was a history of false alarms, and a lot of people have a certain stoicism around these things. I could see the dad being the one to not want to "bother" steph about his discomfort.

I'd guess if anyone knew Don would actually die so quickly they'd do things differently, but they probably didn't want to make a big fuss out of what they suspected to be something like heartburn or a panic attack.

the article says that his father had had chest pains before... his sister obviously felt this wasn't a dire situation, but it ended up being one... after his passing i highly doubt she meant to keep the information from Stephon.
