I am as everyone else is intrigued with the influx of European talent, but are these guys as good as advertised? Take for example, this guy Pavel the 7'5 serbian player. this guy is moving up the lottery fast and may push Carmello Anthony down the ladder to #5.

Now this guy Pavel was not noticed because he was on the bench playing behind Shwanell Scott.. Yup, thats right Shawnell scott from ST. Johns the guy who could not cut it in the NBA.. Now I ask, although Pavel is 18 with upside, you mean to tell me that he is not good enough now to surplant Scott as the starting center?

Another thing, if carmello slips out the 3rd spot, do we trade the farm to move up?

Oh come on! Why do you think Dirk Nowitzki played in second league in Germany!?!
Those guys are kids and barely a team in europe can risk playing talent over experience! its the same story like in the nba! only that there is a lot less hype about talent and a lot more hype about veteran leadership!
And yes even lesser skilled american players are getting more attention in europe than young talents! Sad to say but thats the way it is!

I don't know if this is the case, but I've read that the Euro teams like to hide their younger guys from the NBA. Pavel did sit behind Scott, but when Scott left the team Pavel was benched and got no playing time. Why was this? I don't know. There are also alot of reports of Euro teams not playing their young guys when they think too many NBA scouts are in the gym.

I don't think thats the case you can normally see that there is some canstance in playing time with most of the young talents! PT seems to depend on the fact if there is a american player earning his money on the same position and on the pressure-level the team is facing.
A player like Mithat Demirel had limited pt for alba berlin (7 consecutive championships in germany) because Derrick Phelps earned his money playing PG too.
Well Demirel is one of the most talented PG in germany, perhapes you have seen him at the World Championships last year where he was the starting point guard an performed great!
Well the moral of the story is that happens to many talents in europe!

good point tk.

i'm sure there's a fair amount of hype involved but i can't blame them if some of these general managers are suckered into falling for the hype then more power to the players and their representation.

but i, myself don't think their can ever be a "great" basketball player to come from overseas and the taller the overseas player is...i feel the shorter his nba career will be. that's just my opinion.

carmelo anthony had a perfect freshman campaign and he is falling in the draft. remember how you can look at past drafts and wonder what in the world made this guy take this guy over this guy??? well the 2003 draft will be known for that.

Tkf it is clear that euro teams try ansd hide their players from NBA scouts. Plus at 17 18 would you be ready to go to another country and learn another language earning madd jack without acting up
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

maybe I don't understand the above... How about Dirk? TParker is solid, and may have 'great' potential.

Understood, and not to belabor the point, but how about Yoa? It's only a matter of time that those Euro guys taller than 7'2 are really good. Maybe not this year, but really soon.

If Sabonis didn't get hurt, he would have been one of the better centers in NBA history in my opinion. Injuries (literally) kept him grounded. I don't know this Russian from the man in the moon but, if he could be this healthy, young Sabonis... I'd be willing to take a shot... as opposed to a guy with VERY limited potential that has been hailed as a savior, which he's not... Kaman.

Let's face it... the Europeans are coming!! ... as opposed to a dwindling US college pool of players that should be staying in school and overwhelming majority of high school kids who come out in an attempt to be the next KG and Stoudamire.

prodson, I think your statement can be applied to all 7'3 and above basketball players...not just international ones.

The value is coming from Europe. This league is going to have more and more European "flavor" going forward.

I am not saying that these Euro guys are not good, but this hiding them for NBA scouts thing sounds odd.. These Euro teams are getting paid good compensation for releasing these guys to play NBA ball.. I understand that Dirk played off the bench, but dirk was a real skinny undeveloped kid, this pavel kid is a solid guy at 7'5, if he has the skills that even warrant a high lottery look, then whey is he not playing over Shawnell scott?

that is all I am asking. I just know that Nesterovic got high praise during the draft, and so far he is a average Center, nothing great, Nesto moves well, block shots, and is still young, I am sure vs lesser competition he could rack up good numbers, but in the NBA he is average..

TKF... I think being 7'5 and 18 may have something to do with. Growing into ones body as it becomes bigger and remaining coordinated is a tough thing to do. He may just be gaining some of the athleticism and coordination that was under wraps by growing so much. Darko said he couldn't even walk ... recently. Just a theory.

rain that may be true, but there are like 15 Euro prospects in the draft, from Darko to the Greek Baby shaq, who are all supposed to be big, mobile, and skilled, then all the guards are supposed to be eithe steve nash clones or Micheal Jordan types. I know that just can't be all true, all these Euro guys are not going to be as good as advertised, I can bet on that, I hope the hype continues and Carmello slips down to #9...

I know it won't happen....but, I still can dream.....
