Redskins' Taylor dies after shooting

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor died early Tuesday morning after being shot Monday by intruders at his home in Miami, the National Football League club confirmed Tuesday.

The 24-year-old National Football League defender died in a Florida hospital where he underwent nearly seven hours of emergency surgery Monday to repair a severed femoral artery, the team confirmed in a website statement.

"He did not make it through the night," Taylor's attorney and long-time friend, Richard Sharpstein, told the Washington Post, calling the death "a ridiculous unnecessary tragedy."

Sharpstein also told CNN that "people" entered Taylor's home and fired two shots, one hitting a wall and the other striking Taylor in the leg.

"This was a deliberate attack," Redskins vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato told the Post.

Miami police said Taylor was struck by the bullet in the femoral artery, causing a significant blood loss that Sharpstein told the Post "could not really be stopped, only curbed a bit."

"Seemed like a lot of hope after he responded to the doctor's command, but he lost of a lot of blood," Taylor family friend Donald Walker told the Post.

Taylor was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital after his fiancee made an emergency call.

"He never regained consciousness," Sharpstein told CNN. "He was unconscious when the fire rescue people arrived. It's a senseless tragic death."

Neither Taylor's fiancee nor their 18-month-old daughter was harmed physically by the intruders in the second break-in at the home within eight days.

Taylor and his fiancee had been in the bedroom when a disturbance was heard in the living room, Sharpstein said.

"(He) tried to get a small machete that he keeps under the bed to defend himself but the door was burst into," Sharpstein told CNN, adding that Taylor's fiancee hid under the covers until the assailants had fled.

Sharpstein said he had received a call from Taylor's father, Florida City police chief Pete Taylor, informing him of Taylor's death at about 5 in the morning.

"He was overwrought with grief and called me to tell me that Sean was with God," Sharpstein told CNN.

Taylor's family also told the Redskins of his death, according to the team's brief website posting.

"The family of Sean Taylor has notified the Redskins that Taylor passed away Tuesday morning at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He was 24," the posting said.

"Taylor was injured Monday in a shooting at his residence in Miami and did not survive."

Eight days before the fatal shooting, an intruder pried open a window and went through drawers and a safe in the home and also left a knife on a bed, according to police.

That break-in prompted Taylor to ask for time away from team meetings to handle matters relating to the incident, which was granted by Redskins coach Joe Gibbs.

"For all of us here, we're obviously in shock," Gibbs had said Monday. "I know I can't put it in words."

Taylor was the fifth pick of the 2004 NFL Draft and had a strong 2007 season with 42 tackles and a team-high five interceptions until a November 11 knee injury forced him to the sidelines the past two games.

Taylor made 306 tackles and 12 interceptions in parts of four seasons with the Redskins.

The shooting stunned Taylor's Redskins' teammates, who had been optimistic after reports Taylor had made facial expressions Monday night, his first signs of conscious behavoir following concerns of brain damage.

Redskins running back Clinton Portis, a college teammate of Taylor at the Universitry of Miami, lammented Monday that had Taylor not been injured, he would not have been with the team after their Sunday game in Tampa.

"How can you deal with it? It's hard," Portis said. "All we can think about is if he had been with us on the flight to Tampa, if he was at the game with us, then he would not have been in that situation."

Taylor had faced off-field legal issues several times, including a 2004 drunken driving arrest and the dropping of felony assault charges from a 2005 off-season incident involving firearms.

Taylor, who had been ejected from a playoff game for spitting on an opponent, pleaded no contest last year to two misdemeanor charges in connection with the 2005 incident and was in the final days of 18 months on probation.

He had originally faced three felony counts of aggravated assault with a firearm and two battery misdemeanors after a confrontation over an all-terrain vehicle. Police said gunshots had been fired into the vehicle.

Jesus Christ what a tragedy. What is going on in this world?

Does anyone know what this is about? 2 break-ins in a week? I don't know much about this Taylor kid, did he get in trouble a lot? It seems that the police chiefs' son would keep his nose clean.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

It just goes to show how badly the Curry and Walker break-ins could have gone. Pro athletes need to take their personal security very seriously.

Sad story, but for some reason, I don't think this was some robery attempt.. they broke in and took nothing.. I am sure more will come out about this, especially considering taylors checkered past..

That's really messed up. The guy had some problems but to get shot by an intruder in your home, with your 1 year old daughter sleeping nearby is insane.

Seriously, what is this world coming to? This type of home intrusion has been happening a lot lately and not just with professional athletes. It's really sickening.

My condolences to his family, friends and fans. Having lived in DC for 10 years, and knowing how crazy they are over their Skins, this is going to be a major story for weeks and months to come.

RIP Sean Taylor

I think the "checkered past" hand has been severely overplayed. The body isnt even cold and folks already are looking to indict Taylor on a years old incident. Bayless was his typical classless self. Pacman Jones and Taylor are not interchangeable, despite what some would want you to believe.

In any event, I expect the Mariotti's, Witlock's, and Bayless' of the world to have a field day with this tragedy and push their own agendas.

This is getting out of hand.

The expression "What Is This World Coming To" is this a knee jerk expression whenever we hear bad news? I see this said almost automatically whenever shocking tragedy strikes us. Do we say this without contemplating on the time we're living in or is this in the same fold as "What Next"?

Regardless of the circumstances this stuff shouldn't be happening to people. Being famous, having money, and being blessed with talented abilities doesn't save you from the evil that's so prevalent in this world.

A person I'm very close to have this discussion almost once a month it seems. They always try to argue from the kid's standpoint and It makes me furious. I'm like no!..... kids need to be popped in the mouth when they get out of line because that's how we were raised back in the day. But then you have the Mendez brothers case, Columbine, Time-Out, Kids Calling Cops Over Child Abuse, Nanny 911 all of these showing how Kids take matters in their own hands or gain power from parents/authority figures giving them more control. I work in a public school district and I'm around kids all the time and often times their parents and let me tell you it's sickening what I see. The sad part about it many of the parents represents my generation and almost all of them are Saps and Pansies when dealing with thier children.

The problem is deeper than this IMO but it's at the core no doubt.

You gotta be a low life bastard to break into someones home. Even more ballsy to do it when you know they are home.

Crazy stuff man. I thank God that he has kept me and those close to me away from harm. All we can do is learn from tragedies like this and try to make the world better starting with ourselves.

Rip, taylor.

Or being ostracized from the mainstream and being denied the American dream can lead to desperation. Violence and poverty have always been inextricably linked by almost every reputable study. Point is, we all have our agendas and theories, again I dont see what this has to do with Taylor especially given the timing of the tragedy and the appropriate grieving period. We have very few facts about the shooting as is.

This was a young family man, who seemingly overcame a troubled stretch and had everything in the world going for him.

He died, by all accounts, protecting his family. Like a man. Thats my focus.

everything you said and everything TrueBlue said, leads to heinous events like this........Why the antagonism? Someone asked why things like this happen. Someone gave their interpretation. Why such anger all the time, guy?

truly a tragedy for his family, his team & the Redskin fans... i've always loved the way this guy played the game... when he was in college i wanted the Giants to draft him bigtime, but they made the Eli trade instead.

R.I.P. Sean.
