Could Van Gundy Return To Knicks?
November 23, 2007 - 10:17 am
New York Daily News -
Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reports that the status of Isiah Thomas as president and coach of the Knicks is now day-to-day. He discusses a list of top candidates to replace Thomas if he is fired, including former Knick head coach Jeff Van Gundy.

James Dolan knows that under Van Gundy, the Knicks were winners and that Van Gundy was immensely popular with the fans.

Van Gundy immediately would find eight or nine players who are willing to compete, defend and sacrifice for the good of the team. He would restore the defensive-minded culture that made the Knicks a feared team in the '90s.

His greatest challenge would be getting through to Eddy Curry, who mostly has looked disinterested this season. However, Van Gundy has had a pretty good success rate working with centers such as Patrick Ewing, Marcus Camby and Yao Ming.

Isola believes former Knick and native New Yorker Mark Jackson may also garner consideration and discusses the possibility that Jackson could be hired as an assistant coach who would eventually take over the head coaching job from Van Gundy.

I know Van Gundy left us high and dry, but that guy is a good coach. I'd welcome him back, atleast he knows what the hell he's doing out there.

Van Gundy as coach? GM? Or both?

I can't imagine him wanting to come back to the current situation.

But if he does come back, I hope he brings his Honda Civic with him, for Martin & Andrew's sake. They love that Civic.

Are you kidding me ?

This guy was only able to excel because of Pat Riley (who he piggy backed) and Patrick Ewing who helped him get the job.

He always had a vetern team who already understood the game and they were committed as athletes. Vandummy was in the right place at the right time.

He fooled many , but not me.

Jeff's only skill in coaching is on defense, like a Dick Harter type never a head coach.

What has he done outside of NY?

Houston gave vandummy the boot and hired Rick Adelman what is that telling you.

I would hire stan vangundy before I hire jeff.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

Van Gundy is an excellent coach. But if he left us than, why would he come back now when the situation is far more dire.

Man what do you guys think of Rick Carlisle? I always felt he was a very underappreciated coach. If Isiah is eventually fired, I think Rick would be a good candidate. He seems to instill order and is a no nonsense kind of guy.

He did get to the playoffs with Stevie Francis as his starting PG. And now Stevie can't even get minutes in part II at Houston.

carlisle is a defensive coach. this is not a defensive team. it would be another mismatch.

He wouldn't work because he ruffles to many feathers with the brasses. You'd have to couple him with a GM/President that was on the same page as him not to mention he let Jamal Tinsley and Stephen Jackson run a muck in Indy his last stop. If not JVG then Silas-coach, Jackson=Ast Coach, and maybe Doug Collins/GM just throwing out some scenarios.

No matter who the next coach is, this team needs to be dismantled. There's no such thing as a match for this group of "players".

If you think that it's just a matter of finding a coach for this group to get them to win, you're sadly mistaken.

Yeah but don't you think that there would also be a change of focus since Isiah would no longer be GM? I would think that anyone replacing him would recognize the defensive deficiencies and look to address that. Then to me Rick would make a lot of sense. Get the defenders we do have to play even better and try to see if he can get more out of the ones who don't defend. It's already clear no matter who we get that defense is the big issue. Rick from what i've seen would demand more from his players and that could be the different voice this group needs right now. Perhaps he'd also make use of our young players who aren't yet set in stone as to what kind of players they'll be.

Surely he'd like Balkman, Mardy, Lee, Jared, Jones & Chan in terms of defensive effort. He might be more successful in getting Zach, Nate and Jamal to lock in harder on D. I don't know if anyone can get Curry to play harder on D, but if we can work on the other players...

2004 (51-31) Yao Ming, Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, Jim Jackson,Maurice Taylor, Kelvin Cato, Clarence Weatherspoon, Eric Piatkowski, Scott Padgett for the most part as your team. In a VERY hard Western Conference vs what Steph did in his first year with Chaney in which, with Step, the team was barel .500?

Are you equating the 2? VG did a very good job that first year. And it was good enough to trade Fran/Mob for TMac. What are we gonna get for Marbury and whatever?
we are talking about Step
