"After averaging 23.7 points as a Bullet and helping the team become an annual contender, a contract dispute led to Monroe's departure. It's something he still regrets. "Always," he said. "I've always said that because I was with a great team. It was unfortunate that it happened." " OUch |

What's wrong with him getting his jersey retired by Washington? It doesnt mean his time in Washington was greater. He was a great player for them. Some of you really dont understand the whole jersey retirement thing. You're idiots.
He already has it retired with the Knicks. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar just had his number retired by the MIlwaukee Bucks. When you're a great player who's played for multiple teams, that happens. Shaq's number will probably be retired by the Magic, Lakers and Heat when its all said and done. Monroe didnt "retire as a Wizard". He retired 27 years ago as a Knick. This was a way for Washington to honor him for his years there. You're all idiots. |

Posted by LBeast: I would not have put it so bluntly, but Lbeast is right. This is not like baseball where you have to chose your team when inducted into the hall of fame. The wizards simply retired his number. Now his comments might create some controversy, but when you are before the Washington media getting your number retired by the Wizards, what are you going to say "Oh, I am not a Bullet anymore, I will forever be a Knick." He is just saying what they would expect him to say. I am sure if you looked back at his comments when the Knicks retired his number, he did not say "I will always be a Bullet." Trust the Process

I have to agree with LBeast and TheGame.
He did not "retire as a Bullet." He is having his uniform number retired by the franchise (though I can't believe it took this long). As for his comments, he has a point. When he joined the Knicks, they were already an established championship-caliber team with several players, including some future Hall of Famers, who were totally part of the NY sports scene. The Pearl, though a great player, was seen more as an outsider, at least at the start. I don't think Earl is knocking the Knicks at all. He's being honored by the Wizards, and is saying all the right things, and is being classy as usual. He still gets huge cheers at the Garden and will always be one of the most popular players in Knick history. |

Earl cut back his game when he got here to fill in. By playing second to clyde he reduced his allstar appearences and stats.
He chose the money and got moved to NY, which I think he was grateful for. He could have been moved to alot of places and free agency was not an option. The ABA was. Earl killed the knicks and prevented them to repeat in 71'. He just got some respect by the WIz, it ain't no big deal. |

Earl injured his knee after a few great years on the Bullets. When we got him, he wasn't the same player and his spin moves weren't as effective. He was still very good, but he wasn't a star anymore and he wouldn't have been a star if he stayed in Baltimore or went to another team.

Earl chose to retire with the Wizards over the Knicks ?
Now that's hip. |
