From the NY Times:

"An Eastern Conference official said Houston had also broached the subject of compensation with the Knicks, who own Van Gundy's rights until July 31, perhaps giving up a second-round draft pick."

If it does happen: Sweet!

Maybe we can hold out for a 1st round pick for next year.

Let me ask you this...when was the last time a second rounder stepped onto the floor and contributed something valuable for the Knicks? For that matter - when was the last time we even had a draft pick play on our team that meant something more then garbage time.

That being said, I am glad we might squeeze something of value out of Van Gundy quitting, even though we dont really deserve anything.

Oasis... Vujanic is some good trade bait. He was taken in the second round and has been speculated he could be special. Mo Williams, Josh Howard, Outlaw, Delfino, some draft and follow Euro's... all might be available in the 2nd. Things are changing with the influx of European talent. Ideally if we had three 2nd's we could package two of them, with the first pick in the second round (no guaranteed contract) being of good value and another 2nd... we could trade up into the early twenties to take someone like Boris Diaw or Pavlovic... not bad.
Especially if we use the #9 as bait for a established player.

it never hurts to have more picks. besides with a bafoon like layden it gives us more chances that he might stumble on a player (i.e. vujanic, who layden didnt want to pick).

how in the world do you substantiate a line like: "besides with a bafoon like layden it gives us more chances that he might stumble on a player (i.e. vujanic, who layden didnt want to pick)"?

That's ridiculous.

Why even bring this up-why would Houston give up anything when they can just wait until August 1st to sign the contract? JVG can be an unpaid consultant until then.

You can not be an unpaid consultant to another team while you are under contract with another. I don't know if that would be called tampering or whatever, but at that point the league office would get involved and transfer compensation and fines, etc. Think Riles in the early 90s with Miami.

good point martin !
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

The difference between JVG and Riley is that Houston has the permission of the Knicks to speak with Houston- Miami did not.
VG for 2nd rounder?
