Charles Dolan tells David Stern that Jim won't be bounced at MSG
Sunday, November 18th 2007, 4:00 AM

Charles Dolan had a recent talk with David Stern - you'll never guess who it was about - and the news isn't good for Knicks fans who can't wait to see Dolan's son, Jim, removed from his CEO position at the Garden.

The elder Dolan reportedly told the NBA commissioner, "It's Jimmy's team and I've got bigger stuff to concern myself with," a Stern confidante said on Friday, just a few days removed from the Isiah Thomas-Stephon Marbury blowup that showed that the Knicks are a franchise lacking leadership.

If Jim Dolan is as entrenched as his father made it seem, get ready for more losing and more bad hires whenever the younger Dolan sends Isiah Thomas on his merry way.

While it's nice to think about having Jerry Colangelo or Kiki Vandeweghe come in to try to get things turned around at the Garden, Dolan will never hire a basketball person who wants complete control over the operation, as Colangelo and Vandeweghe would unquestionably demand, according to persons who have had dealings with Dolan on the very subject.

As bad as things have gotten, Dolan has not come to the obvious conclusion that he needs to divorce himself from the Knicks. That is the depressing message league officials have also heard in dealings with the two Dolans, as well.

"Jim's going to continue to hold the power and whoever he brings in is going to have to kowtow to him," said a league source. "He won't give people total control. A guy like Jerry Colangelo will tell Jimmy to stay in his suite and stay out of his way because he's running things. But Jimmy would never agree to that. It's more important for him to be the man than it is to win. Winning is not the most important thing for Jim. If it was, he wouldn't have hired Isiah."

Taking it a step further, without Thomas, the Knicks never would have brought in Marbury, whose shaky reputation took another hit when he went AWOL last week. And the Knicks wouldn't have had a president who allowed a player to get away with such an act. You think Jerry West would have given his OK for Marbury to play the next game after he bolted the team? The entire episode again revealed that the organization needs a strong personality to take control.

"Stephon Marbury is wrong," said Charles Barkley on TNT. "I like Isiah Thomas, I've been a big defender of his, but Stephon Marbury's track record speaks for itself. If you can't be happy playing with Kevin Garnett, you're never going to be happy. Isiah Thomas made a huge mistake bringing Stephon Marbury to the Knicks, thinking he could change him. Stephon Marbury is who he is."

And who is that, Charles?

"Stephon Marbury is one of those guys that when he came to the NBA we said, ‘That guy is going to be a great player, one day, when he gets it,'" he added. "And then five years later you say, ‘He ain't getting it yet. He's never going to get it.' Stephon Marbury is a very talented basketball player who's never going to get it. He's going to do it his way, which is the wrong way. You'd think a guy who has been on four teams would think, ‘I did it my way, but it ain't working,' and he would change. But Stephon Marbury is not going to change."

Neither, apparently, is Jim Dolan, which is an even bigger problem if you root for the Knicks.

Time to think about Brooklyn Nets?
I think the only power that can discorage Jimmy is fans.
If we will make his club insignificant he may concentrate only on his "Rock" band.

Wishfull thinking... There are too many Nixluvas around to do this...

"It's Jimmy's team and I've got bigger stuff to concern myself with,"

That's all you need to know about Dolan ownership of the Knicks.

They don't care.

This shouldn't shock or surprise anyone. We've always known that the Dolan's biggest concern is making money. They know that they've been making money even when the team loses. It's hard to force them to change so long as corporate tickets are still being bought and given as favors to clients and so forth. Things would have to drop so far that no one was coming anymore before they'd take action.

The other problem is what they'd do if they did make a change. Who are they likely to hire? I've been saying that we can't trust them to make the right pick. The fans are in a tough spot. We would have more control if not for the people with money buying up so many tickets and coming to the Garden as an event rather than being true fans. If it was up to the true fans of the team the Garden wouldn't sell as many tickets when the team was doing bad. Then we'd have more leverage, but as it is, there's less leverage for the average fan.

We're screwed until Jim Dolan passes on, which could be several decades from now. It's hopeless.

Does Dolan hava any smart kids? We can hope for a future generation.

Thorn will see the light soon enough and rebuild the nets.

I'm starting to think the only answer is to stop watching the games on tv. Lowering their tv ratings is the only method I have of registering my dissatisfaction.

Ohhh that just sucks! Completely! Now we know why Jimmy Dolan is such an idiot. It comes from the genes! How pathetic that Charles Dolan doesn't realize the business he is losing having the Knicks suck as much as they do.

You wanna talk about money rather than winning? Perfect! Have a team that makes the playoffs, that makes positive headlines and that is a must have in national television and you will get more money. If there is a franchise that can get you lots of money by having them come back to respectability is the Knicks.

Idios owner with an idiot father. The point of this article is that to get back to respectability things have to drastically change. The players are bad. The coach is worse. But if the owner still wants control on something he knows nothing about, the owner is the first thing that has to either change or give control to someone that really knows.

Ahh, why can't they just sell the team and avoid seeing a mass of suicide attempts in NY?

This is the root cause of the problem as everybody already knows. Fans (at least the real ones) want the Knicks to win, Jimbo and his two bimbos just want power and new ways to abuse it. Unfortunately for us the "Knicks" that we loved and cheered for have ceased to exist. This is not a basketball franchise any more and the time has come to stop rooting for them. If you really think about it the only thing in this organization I can still identify with is the LOGO and the PAST. Everything else needs to go and when it has come to that point you have to question why we beat ourselves on the head about Jimmy hood and his merry whores.

I have a demanding job, wife at home and a regular lfe. I can definitely find other things to do than worry about why three of the biggest losers on the planet have gotten together to deliver one losing season after another to us. It is obvious to me and to most people out there and on this board. But then there are those that would drink kool aid and call themselves real fans because they aren't smart enough to deal with reality and would rather continue to support corruption at all levels.

Duck Folan, Thuck Fomas, Muck Farbury

The three of them have destroyed everything the Knicks once stood for and if this is the way to go forward then you can go on your own with your brainwashed following, I don't want any part of this sh** any more.

It's gotta be really hard to take something this big away from your child, and it's probably not even worth it financially anyway. I read a while ago that the Knicks are only like 2% of Cablevision's total revenues.

No surprise here. The media is the one that made up the whole idea of Papa Dolan putting James in check. The media is the one that keeps on running to Stern with questions also. Papa Dolan just delivered the pimp hand to Stern.

It comes from DJ. We don't need to know who wrote it (if anyone) or where it came from. (If anywhere.) We have absolute trust in DJ. He would never steer us wrong.

I'm not sure how long I can justify rooting for Jimmy Dolan's play thing. It's not this town's team anymore.
