He's a very good player and a good character guy. Put him at first base. You're damaging Boston while addressing a big need. We can outbid Boston. We always do.

save the money for Johan... we already have a buncha albatross past their prime veteran contracts on the books... we don't need another... Giambi needs to find some atbats somehow... there's no way they're going to have him as a pinch hitting bench player next season all year to start off the season.

the only way u can make sense of signing Lowell is if u can somehow unload Giambi, Matsui or Damon.

Sox And Yankees
Read Dan Roche's Red Sox Blog
(WBZ) BOSTON Mike Lowell has a major decision to make.

WBZ's Dan Roche has confirmed the free agent third baseman has drastically different offers from the Red Sox and the Yankees on the table.

Roche has learned the Red Sox have a firm offer of a three-year contract worth $36-to-$40 million.

The Yankees have offered the World Series MVP a four-year deal, worth $56-to-$60 million, according to Roche. But they would like him to play first base, if they re-sign Alex Rodriguez to play third.

If he helps them get past the Red Sox, the extra profits will more than pay for Lowell's salary. Giambi is what economists call a "sunk cost." You have to move on. You can't make bad future decisions because of him.

What matters is how much you're paying him relative to how much money he helps bring in.

I think they're driving up the Red Sox price and also using him to hasten the ARod process. Floating that offer is also beneficial for the agent. I don't know how real that offer is.

Lowell had a career year this year, but his career average production would only be league average for a first baseman. You don't need to pay $15 million for that, and you definitely don't want to do that for 4 years for a 32 yr old player.

With Arod back in the fold, it makes sense to use a Shelley Duncan/Wilson Betemit/Jason Giambi/Andy Phillips/Jorge Posada combo at first- the first two guys being the primary players there. They should focus on upgrading the bullpen now.

is Mike Lowell some kinda marquee attraction all of a sudden? u really think more fans are gonna come to the games cuz we just signed Mike Lowell? if the Yankees are still able to get Johan, then i really could care less if they sign Lowell or not... we don't really need another $15 million dollar 1B on the books for the next 4 years... 1B is the easiest position to fill other than DH on any baseball team... there's really no way to justify that pricetag if u really think about it... he'd be a much better value if he were coming here to play 3B, & even then that's a ridiculously overpriced contract for Lowell... i'd have a hard time justifying signing Torii Hunter to that amount of money to play CF for crying out loud.

If he helps the team win in the regular season and/or helps the team get even just 1 round farther in the playoffs, he'll be bringing in loads of money. The Steinbrenners know far more about making money than you or I know. I'm sure they didn't pick the number 60 mil out of a hat.

Well he signed a 3 year deal with Boston. I'm definitely not heartbroken. Someone else pointed out on another forum that Lowell is really built for Fenway Park and didn't hit that well on the road last year. I changed my opinion about getting him after looking up his home/away splits last year.

Shelley Duncan & Wilson Betemit will be fine at 1B for now... offense won't be our problem this year now that we got ARod & Jorge back in the fold... we need to address our bullpen depth & acquire a frontline starting ace.

Addressing pitching and hitting needs should not be mutually exclusive

yes, i realize that, but again, hitting is not the issue w/this team, it's pitching & bullpen depth... this team led the league in offense last year.

but the team was awful offensively in the playoffs. You can never have too much strength offensively.
