gotta get MO next and then hopefully they can convince pettitte to re-sign. if they get those 3 back thats a huge step. i'm still interested to see how cashman fills the hole at 3rd and elsewhere

Those are all very important issues. They might struggle just to make the playoffs if they don't get someone pretty good at 3rd base. The drop off from A-Rod's production would be too huge.

Good way to put it. The Yankees can afford to overpay and should do so if necessary for Pettitte, Mariano, and perhaps Mike Lowell.

this is a horrible contract for the Yankees, in the exact same mold as the Damon contract, but they had to do it... Yankees were morons for not negotiating an extension last year when Jorge & Mo were open to discussing deals & before Jorge had that monster season last year... now they're going to pay through the nose to keep these guys way past their prime, but that's the risk they chose to take & now they're going to pay the price for their miscalculation... good for Jorge.

They took a gamble that Jorge problem wouldn't have an inconceivably brilliant year. I can understand taking that gamble. It just turned out to be a poor gamble. I agree about Mariano, though.

Ugh, I'm with TMS. I like Posada, but this is a terrible deal. Posada deserves about half that. The Yankees are spending too much to hold onto their past-prime vets.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Now, I agree that the Yankees drastically overpaid, but I think he'll bring in more than $52 mil anyway unless he has a devastating injury and it's not like the NBA where there's a huge penalty for overpaying players.

Honestly, I'm okay with missing the playoffs next year if we give our youth some burn. At some point, the best strategy for the Yankees would be to trim payroll. Get a nice core of young guys, then the free agents will flock to the team and we can restock and overpay for *younger* stars who complement our youth. Right now we're just stockpiling older vets which makes no sense. Is winning 90 games and losing in the first round that important?

I like the idea of getting younger stars, although I think that's awfully hard. They usually get extensions with their current teams. I'm content with keeping our veterans around--many of these players should be "Yankees for life"--and increasingly incorporating more young players on the team. If they're young pitchers develop, there's no reason to predict losing in the first round.

I wanted them to give him 3 yrs not 4- we'll see if they start working him in at 1b.

They should've re-opened talks during the year. They knew their options at catcher were probably 3 yrs away and no one good would come free in the interim. Jorge was always the best option at catcher and what happened was he had a career year and had leverage to get the 4th year out of them. I think people are very scared of his decline- but he did start catching late. He was still very good last year and should be good with the bat for the life of this contract. Behind the plate will be interesting.

Now there's a 3/45 offer for Mo out there which is a ton of money and I don't see how he wouldn't sign it.
