When New York Knicks captain Stephon Marbury learned about the plight of 17-year-old Sohaib Qureshi, whose skull was crushed by a falling tree limb as he played catch with his younger brother in Riverside Park last summer, Marbury knew he had to do something for one of his biggest fans.

"This is where I'm supposed to be," Marbury said as he paid a visit to Qureshi's hopsital room on Thursday. "And this is what I'm supposed to do."

Qureshi has been hospitalized since Aug. 30. After laying in a coma for 15 days, he can now breathe on his own and communicates by blinking his eyes.

Upon hearing that one of his favorite basketball players was going to visit him on Thursday, Qureshi could barely sleep the night before because he wanted to practice using his right hand to shake hands with Marbury when the Knicks star arrived.

Qureshi didn't have to worry about shaking hands, because upon entering his room on Thursday, Marbury went straight to Qureshi and gave him a huge hug. Even though the teen could not smile, it was clear that meeting one of his heroes meant the world to him.

"Coming here is something we are supposed to do," said Marbury. "To uplift a kid's spirits, and to allow him even the smallest amount of joy from what he's been going through with his injury, we are supposed to do things like this. It's always a blessing to be able to do something to give a kid like him some fulfillment."

After introducing himself to the Qureshi family and having pictures taken with them, Marbury reached into his bags and took out countless presents, including gifts from the Knicks and shoes from his own Starbury collection.

As Marbury autographed the three pairs of sneakers he had brought with him, Qureshi's brother and sister pointed out that young Sohaib was already wearing a pair of Starburys -- as was his father!

A talented young basketball player, Qureshi also coached younger children. When his family pointed out that his players had made a poster with pictures and messages, Marbury was truly touched to read the get-well wishes from children whom Qureshi had impacted over the past few years.

After autographing Sohaib's collection of hats, including his favorite white Knicks one, Marbury continued giving out gifts to the young man and his family, including Knicks towels, T-shirts, headbands, hats, and a Knicks duffel bag.

Marbury also gave Qureshi an Under Armour Knicks shirt for him to wear while he rehabs. And since Qureshi happens to be a championship chess player, Marbury gave him an assortment of board games, including a chess set.

As Marbury prepared to leave, he leaned back in toward Qureshi, gave him another huge hug and said a prayer. It turned into a truly magical moment when Qureshi did something that he had not been able to do since the injury – lifting his arms to give a peace sign. With his family ecstatic, Marbury mouthed the word "wow" as he gave a peace sign back to Qureshi and promised that he would be his guest at a Knicks game as soon as he recovers from his injuries.

Starbury got the healing powers!

There is no end to the power of what he can do! His calling is much higher than on the court of basketball!

I urge him to fuel his spirit and just retire from his contract, just walk away from the evil monetary pull of MSG and heal thyself and the world!

Its clear his powers are stronger away from the court than playing.

I don't like the basketball player, but I sure as hell appreciate the man. You have to give it to Marbury... you just don't see other athletes as genuine.

Good read.

Doesn't change what he is on the court but he's doing good off the court that's for sure.

Nice going by Marbury. I definitely do appreciate what he's been doing off the court, but his bball game is deteriorating, and that's way unfortunate.

Touching story. For all his craziness off the court (i.e. quirky interviews, dancing to be closer to god, questionable nicknames for his wife, etc.), the man means well and does a whole lot of good.

Great story. Jesus christ superstarbury at his best.

I wonder if he did his "closer to God" dance? He's gotta get that copyrighted.

if Marbs could only transfer his generosity & community spirit to the basketball court, he'd average about 14 assists every year... too bad it don't work that way... he's about the most charitable professional athlete in sports, but in terms of leading a team, he's severely lacking.

It's not a matter of character, it's just not what he does well. He doesn't have Jason Kidd's talent in terms of passing.

u just repeated what i just said pretty much... the guy simply doesn't have the ability to lead a team... it doesn't take Jason Kidd's passing ability to lead a team btw... look at Chauncey Billups, u telling me he's got Jason Kidd's court vision & passing skills? is he even more talented than Steph in terms of basketball skills? i don't think so to be honest... leadership is not all about passing the ball to teammates... it encompasses everything in the lockerroom, on the court, & during practices, that from what we've seen out of the tangible results so far, Steph doesn't really seem to have IMO.

Selective Memory

Number 3 needs to stop turning it over when the Knicks needs him most. Friday was a perfect example of missing an answer for the Orlando 10-0 run, despite the Knicks offense clicking in the first half with excellent ball movement.

Steph is a very giving guy in his personal life.

As for his BB life, let's get a bit of perspective here. In the 1st 2 games he had only 1 TO in each game. In game 3 he had 3 TO's and only the last game was really bad in terms of TO's. If not for him and Jamal I think we would've won that game. I don't think his defense has been bad all the time, but the last game was awful. He's gonna have trouble with small quick guards. That doesn't mean we can't still win against teams with quickness at PG. STeph is also avg'ng 7 assists and that is also not a bad stat. It only looks bad in comparison with the games best passers which he is not.

Let's also remember that there are only a FEW great leaders at the PG position. It's not like every team has one and it's just us that doesn't. Great PG leaders are the exception not the rule.

Its amazing that even in the mist of GOD giving love, you guys can still manage to turn it into a "oh by the way here is another dagger into Marbury" thread. This was all about giving love to a fallen child.
Sad, sad, sad.
GOD arose JESUS from the grave !!! Isiah arose the Knicks from their grave !!!
