It should be clear to everyone except the most blinded haters like TrueBlue and Islesfan that defense has become far more important to the players than it ever has. Everytime the players talk, they speak about the importance of defense. It is obvious by the preseason preview that we saw, that Isiah is drilling the team on defensive principals in practice. It's obvious to most that we value defense more than we have since 1999. Now my question is. At what point do we actually start playing it?

we'll start playing defense when we get players in here that know how to play defense.

Crawford doesn't have it in him to play NBA level defense. Neither does Marbury.

Our defense is fine. It's the offense that is not performing as it should. All we need is 150 points per game out of these guys and we should make the playoffs.

Defense is overrated.
Team just needs to score more point that opponent. Right?
And we have 5 players who can drop 20 on regular basis. Right?
So with some help from the bench we can have 130 every night.
Not too many teams in NBA can overcome 130. We are in very god shape...

130 is good, but I like the having the buffer of those twenty additional points.

But you should understand that it is tuff even for a genius like Isiah to reach 150.
He will need to increase payrole to 400 mils. Can Dolan go for this?

I've got an idea, now that Larry Brown is gone we could play like the "Suns of the East".

I think the knicks defense has been way better that in the past. Guys are converging but its not perfect yet. Guys look like they fall asleep.

On the bench you see isiah telling them to talk. The focus has definately changed. Im just so anxious for these guys to become a machine. I believe they can do it more consistantly as the season moves on.

Offense is a whole other problem.

I'm looking forward to when Balkman get's back, cuz he's a part of the equation too. His range, speed and hustle are missing right now. He's infectious out there. I think Q is another guy that may just get better as he get's healthier. He's likely still rounding into form after the down time from his back surgery. I think the same can be said for Mardy, who isn't 100%. Usually guys need a good bit of time to get all the way back, no matter what the surgery was. I think we'll eventually get it right. Not that I want him to be injured, but Jared going down could be a blessing in disguise. That should open up more time for Balk and Chan. I expect the team to get a couple of levels better by the end of the year.

The same goes for the offense. I don't expect that we'll look like this the whole season. There's no need to be alarmed just cuz at this time the team isn't clicking on all cylinders. The engine doesn't need replacing, just a tune up. We've got all the parts.

This post doesn't make any sense to me. When did I say that it hasn't? Kind of dumb actually. Our players are known to talk about many different things before, during/throughout, and at the end of the season Bip. You can throw in the coaches also. Where was our push, quick offense last yr remember Marbury said "we should run, become more of a uptempo team", Crawford was talking about doing more penetrating to the hole last yr because he saw tons of gaps in defenses and let them off the hook a lot by shooting too many jumpers? Did we/he? What about this yr? How come our guards look like they're having even more difficulty executing an effective power game? That's what it's always been with this team stop talking, STFU, play hard, and execute. I also heard other things over the summer up til now that had nothing to do with defense..... like Lee informing us he'd been working on shooting jumpers so he could log more minutes at the 3, being informed that Nate is trying to learn to play more controlled and play more minutes at the one, Crawford informing us he bulked up so he could over power defenders off the dribble, Marbury informing us he's going to average 10-12dimes and 2-3ast, and how Jeffries was working on his free throw shooting and developing a mid-range jumper. We've heard a lot Bip. But don't let what I posted the other day about the starting line-up not be in harmony with what the players have been talking about. In another thread yesterday here was my proposed starting line-up.....

Mardy
Q
Balkman
Lee
Zach

Followed it up with saying that's probably our best defensive unit we can put out on the floor.

^ Agreed, TB. Talk is cheap, prove it on the court.

So far, I don't see the massive improvements that people are talking about. I notice a few guys giving defensive effort and the rest of the team couldn't be bothered to try on defense. That has been the same since about half a year into the Isiah regime (probably around the time he claimed that blocks are overrated).

Our fans are the quickest to pull the trigger rewarding them for what they haven't done but intend to do. As if other teams players and coaches aren't saying the same thing and have the same goals if not better. Why are we trying to AT A BOY our players for something they should be doing? Bip you're doing it again lowering that bar

I didn't get any lowering of the bar from what Bip wrote. It seemed to me that all he was indicating was that the team has put more emphasis on D this year, but that he wonders when we'll actually see the results of all of this supposed hard work.

I think that it's been a mixed bag so far. We've seen some decent D and for stretches some good D. I don't think we can ever expect that this team is gonna look like NJ, Chi, Det or SA. Let's not kid ourselves. We don't have those kinds of players. Still if they can get to the point where the effort and execution on D is high enough, we'll win more games.

Don't let the preseason be a referendum on how good or bad the D will be this year. It's only preseason and coaches do things with rotations and also hold back things that they will do in the regular season. some players will never give 110% in preseason. it's just not a good example to go by. Better to see how things develop over the 1st qtr season and then at the halfway point etc. It's a longterm observation. If they play more consistently good D than in the past then that's what we're looking for. We won't know after 1 game or 5, we'll have to see it over time.

TrueBlue you really have a hard time recognizing sarcasm don't you..............HOw in the world can anyone read my original post and not understand I am being nothing but sarcastic. What is wrong with you people?

Ok, I will dumb it down for the sarcastically inept. The Knicks stink at defense. Period.

Yeesh.

I am in agreement with you on this. It's a shame TrueBlue and Islefan can't see this. But then they are haters so I can understand why. They are just blind to what is really going on here. Score 150 a game and we win the title. It's that simple

Chaney at least had the players trying but didnt have the tools, we were undersized and as unathletic as they come.

Now we have the tools but it just wont sink in, Larry couldn't get them to play it, Isiah may have tried to get them to play it but it just wont sink in. Crawford before the Francis trade did play some good D and so did Marbs before his spat with LB, but then it all went downhill and when Isiah tookover it was back to square one.

Defense packed up and left when JVG left town.
