Former NBA referee Donaghy forfeits cash as part of plea deal

October 16, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy has forfeited $30,000 in restitution to the government under his plea deal in a basketball gambling scam.

Donaghy, who admitted to betting on games he officiated, made the payment last month, according to court records. Robert Nardoza, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Brooklyn which is prosecuting the case, confirmed the payment.

The veteran referee pleaded guilty in a Brooklyn court to felony charges for taking cash payoffs from gamblers and betting on games he officiated. He was released on $250,000 bond and is set to be sentenced Nov. 9.

Court papers say Donaghy, 40, started placing bets on NBA games in 2003. He then gave gamblers inside information, including tips on which crews would officiate games and how the various officials and players interacted.

He faces a maximum of 25 years in prison for conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce. He also must pay a $500,000 fine in addition to the restitution already paid.

Ok what refs did he tell gamblers were refereing and what did he tell them about their officiating in those games.

This case has to have others involve, if he told gamblers when other refs were officiating games.

Does everybody really think Donaghy is the lone ranger in this gambling issue?

I don't know. I doubt it's widespread. These refs make good money and they know they're being watched.

I'm talking before the scandal, donaghy was doing his thing since 2003.

I wonder how many others joined in during the 4 yrs of donaghy's activity in illegal gambling.

playa Donaghy owed something to someone and they made him pay.
Why should we assume other refs owed anything to the same people?
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

One of the biggest stories in modern sports history is officially 14 page type fodder. How did this story become an afterthought? Hmmm.... It boggles the mind. No not really.

I could evoke Micheal Vick, but thats too easy. Shoot, Randy Moss fake mooning Green Bay, or the latest TD dance prompted more outrage than this scandal. Why?

Its not just Emperor Stern, the media chose not to exploit this story. Guess it wasnt a real story like an NBA fight
