Renaldo Balkman is getting on the court during practice. He's getting a number of shots up, but is not cleared to jump. There's no precise timetable. Balkman says there is no pain thus far, but is talking about a couple more weeks of rest and rehab.

We need him. He looked alot more confident in summer league play. I expect him to really dominate this year. If only he could consistently hit a jumpshot, we would be set at SF.

If I had a million dollars, I'd be rich. But seriously, he's already an excellent rebounder for a 3 and a good defensive player. And while I don't expect a jump shot out of him very soon, I bet he does a better job of cutting to the hoop and finishing than he did as a rook.

Hahaha. I like the Balkster. He was a great pick where we got him. But he has his limitations and has the sense to play within them.

I'm a huge Balk fan. I think he and Lee would have fit nicely with those teams of the 90's. It's tough to tell how guys will be in the NBA based on their summer league play. I'm really anxious to see the "tax assessor" back on the court. We know he can rebound. We know he can D. But did he improve his all around game? You can tell in the summer league that he gained a lot of confidence. The question is will this translate into more effective playing time on the court. Plus, just having him back raises the competition level at the SF position.

Bip, do you see smaller, maybe poor mans Anthony Mason, when watching Balkman? I admit I've never been great at comparing sports players, even in basketball, like that, but I can't help but notice it when I see Balkman handling the ball with so much confidence and playing D and rebounding. He can make a career of that alone, but obviously he has to work on his shot and maybe develop a couple of moves and all that.

I can see some similarities, except that Mason was a goddamn bulldog. MASSIVE. Renaldo is a stick.

Yeah, I agree that Mason is and was much bigger, and there are some differences. Like Mason prolly used his strength more, while Balkman relies on his quickness and leaping ability, but I think their overall games are VERY similar.
