New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach Isiah Thomas announced today that guard Allan Houston has been re-signed as a free agent after a two-season absence from the court.

"After much thought and prayer, I have decided to return to the NBA as a member of the New York Knicks. I have worked extremely hard in the last year and a half to accomplish my dream of playing in the NBA again," Houston said.

“After my wife and I were blessed with the birth of our fourth child last week, I realized that New York is where I am supposed to be, and the Knick uniform is the one I want to wear. I have seen the Garden in some of its best moments, and I truly believe that this team is on the verge of experiencing that again. This team is hungry and energetic. I hope to contribute in the weeks and months ahead.

“Thank you to all of the Knick fans and those that have supported me. I will always be a Knick, and I am committed to helping this team compete for a championship."

Originally retiring on Oct. 17, 2005 following training camp two seasons ago, Houston is the team’s fourth leading scorer in franchise history during the regular season (11,165) and eighth leading scorer during the playoffs (1,139). Only NBA legends Patrick Ewing, Walt “Clyde” Frazier and Willis Reed have scored more points during their regular season careers with the orange and blue. On Oct. 4, 1999, he was named a team captain, and held that title for six seasons. He was selected to be a member of the 2000 and 2001 NBA All-Star teams and was a member of the Gold medal-winning United States team at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney.

On May 16, 1999, the Louisville, KY native authored one of the most memorable shots in club history with a game-winning runner at Miami in the closing seconds of Game Five in the first round of the 1999 NBA Playoffs. After defeating the Heat, the Knicks went on to defeat the Atlanta Hawks in the conference semifinals and Indiana Pacers in the conference finals to make their first NBA Finals appearance since 1994.

The preseason roster is now at 20.

is this a guaranteed contract?

guaranteed deals:
marbury
crawford
mardy
nate
fred jones
jeffries
quentin
balkman
chandler
lee
zach
eddy
morris
malik
jerome

that's 15 guaranteed deals.

that leaves houston, nichols, jordan, russell, and the other guy.

so if houston is going to make the roster, one of those top 15 guys must get waived or traded.

Whether or not his comeback works out, you have to appreciate loyalty like that. Especially with the last few years our team has been through. (Whether this was genuine loyalty or him trying to spin the fact playing for us just made the most sense, I don't know. But I'm willing to pretend it is genuine loyalty to our organization.)

I agree with you. But there will still be a lot of people that dislike the guy because of that contract. It's sad because this guy gave his all to us.
I just hope that people will like me

I've never understood how people didn't like Houston. The guy played 100% every night and played very well for us. How can you blame him for taking that contract or getting hurt?

It's too bad most of this is just for PR.

I was never his biggest fan because I thought he was soft. A huge part of defense is effort, and he's always been a decent defender at best.

Not sure what to say to someone who dislikes him because of the contract. Obviously it wasn't his fault he was offered that kind of money. Would anybody in his shoes have done anything different? Turned it down and asked for less money?

(Of course as I write this I'm remembering how Shaq did that very thing with the Heat last time he signed. Hmm.)

Good thing you bolded that. The all caps and use of persuasive language was one thing, but the bolding helps me pick up on the fact you're truly unhappy.

I don't understand how anyone could dislike Houston while liking Eddy Curry. Any weaknesses Houston had were microscopic compared to Eddy's. And Houston never showed up out of shape like Eddy either.

Hard to tell if he'll be able to help in any shape or form, but it's worth a try.

Not sure how I feel about this. Nice that he's back and all from a sentimental standpoint - but I'll just continue living in "wait and see" land.

I don't think anyone is going past wait and see nor should we. It should honestly be nothing BUT wait and see. It's not a positive OR a negative at this point. Nobody has a clue how this is gonna turn out.

That's not the type of enthusiasm that I'd expect from someone named after Allan.

All I know is, this eliminates all the Lover talk about how Isiah traded for Marbury so he could put him next to Allan. Now he can, along with Zach, Curry, Lee and all the rest.

NO MORE EXCUSES!

Islesfan, I am thrilled, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up terribly high. He did still have microfracture knee surgery and he's 78 years old now. This isn't a risky move and it's probably even smart b/c God knows the Knicks need winning vets, but who the heck knows how long Houston will last.

Regardless of the thread title, you always manage to sneak in a shot at Curry. You sound like a jilted lover.

Not sure how I feel about this signing. Sure we could use his touch from the outside, but last time we saw him in training camp, he ran with a very noticable limp. Not sure how much better he'll be with a year and a half off (not to mention a year and a half older). This means that Nichols and Jones are probably gone. I'd rather work with Nichols for the future than invite Houston to the team now.
