Source: Houston to announce comeback with Knicks

Allan Houston is expected to announce his comeback with the Knicks in the next 24 hours, a source told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand.

Houston, 36, said he wants to return to the NBA because he did not leave by choice. In 2005, Houston retired because of an arthritic left knee. He has not played a full NBA season since 2002-03, when he scored a career-high 22.5 points per game. Over the next two years, he only played 70 games.

"It's really like I never got to finish. You ever been cut off in midsentence and never been able to finish what you were saying? It feels like I get to finish now ... Of course I want to win, but this quest to me is more about being able to play again while I still can," Houston said in a recent interview with ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard.

Houston said he still believes he can make an impact in the NBA.

"I believe I can still have an impact on the game. A lot of my friends and people are saying, 'You should go for three more years if you feel good!' I'm just thinking about this year right now. If things go like I think they will, playing longer would be something to think about," he said.

Houston, who worked as an analyst for ESPN last season, was given a much-criticized $100 million, six-year contract extension in 2001 from the Knicks. The deal made him virtually untradeable once he began to get hurt and crippled the Knicks' ability to make moves because of salary cap woes.

Houston averaged 17.3 points during his 12 NBA seasons. He shot 40.2 percent from 3-point range.

After spending his first three seasons in Detroit, Houston signed with the Knicks, who hoped he would be the outside shooting complement they needed to Patrick Ewing.

Houston helped New York to an improbable spot in the 1999 NBA Finals, when his running jumper in the closing seconds of the deciding Game 5 knocked off the top-seeded Miami Heat in the first round.

I don't understand the delay. Why skip training camp? Were there legal hoops with the insurance that he had to jump through before being allowed to play?

I'm happy to hear that. The young players could use a veteran role model who has good work ethic and has no criminal record.

I'm glad Houston is back I think he can still be effective coming of the bench. He's always been a class act and deserves to go out on his own terms. See you later Fred Jones

I have mixed feelings. I like having Houston back, but I hate the idea of losing Nichols because of limited roster spots.

YES, H20 is back! Now if he plays this yr, he can now leave on his own terms rahter than be forced out due to an injury.

We can be hopeful that houston brings some good luck since he last played for the team that won a playoff game.

Frankly here is the thing Nate Robinson isn't going to get a lot of assists, he is going to shoot all the time and not really help the team win.

Houston maybe slow but i think if isiah uses the rotations right, don't hold your breath he could be effective in spacing the floor. He knows his limitations and isn't going to try to do to much.

Curry should really get 25 minutes night and he should be utlized for most of the time he is on the floor and get about 13 shoots, i think lee and zach are much more effective. We have collins to play defense on big guards we don't need fred jones he couldn't play for the raps or blazers last year, he is not needed.

We need a good shooter. I bet fans have a renewed appreciation for Houston considering the last few seasons.

Whatever Houston adds to offense he'll subtract from the defense. He was never defensively gifted, but all that lateral torque grinding of the knee that D requires will be the first thing a hurt player trying to extend his career will forgo.

It’s almost official.

Allan Houston is coming back and will be attempting to make the Knicks roster in the final weeks of training camp. Isiah Thomas stepped off the practice court this afternoon while the Knicks were finishing up to check on the situation.

“I was just inside and I believe he’s possibly coming Friday,” he said. “I don’t know if the contract has been signed yet, but we’re looking forward to having him come. (The deal) is about as done as it can be. I don’t think he’s signed anything yet, but all signals are pointing in that direction.”

Don’t worry, it’s not going to cost much more than a roster spot.

Houston just wants to play again. He wants to be close to home and family. There are no guarantees. Houston is likely to get the veteran’s minimum should Thomas decide there’s room for a second run with the Knicks.

“If he’s the Allan Houston that we know, we haven’t seen him in a while, but if he’s that good a player, we want good players,” Thomas said.

Jamal Crawford was in the gym over the summer with Houston, and believes there’s something left.

“He didn’t miss a shot,” Crawford said. “When we played, he didn’t miss a shot. I think he shot 100 shots and made 96 of them just to get loose. He still can shoot it. Definitely (he can contribute). He was moving well. … I was surprised at how good he was moving.”

Houston, 36, is not expected to be in uniform tomorrow at MSG against Maccabi Tel Aviv, but he is expected to be on the practice floor on Friday.

What do you think?

Hanging on to Houston could mean the Knicks will have to cut ties with Fred Jones and Demetris Nichols.

[conspiracy theory]
Allan Houston is on an espionage mission. Dolan loves the guy. Houston is the one basketball person Dolan loves more than Isiah. If Houston tells Dolan that he doesn't like what's going on with the team -- Isiah is done. This is a Dolan move, not an Isiah move. Houston is being sent in to give Dolan his assessment of the team and he's infiltrating from within. If it really is how I think it is -- then this is a great move.

I think if H20 is at 80% or better, then he is a serious weapon on this team. You just have to question if he can hold up once the season starts. There is no doubt in my mind he has talent, but his body gave up on him and I wonder how things will be different this time around.

I want to see him do well, the Knicks could seriously use him if he was durable and could play - but the jury is out. Best of luck though, I like H20 and I am glad he is making another run. If Grant Hill can do it why not H20?
