KNICKS IN MIX FOR HOUSTON

September 29, 2007 -- The agent for Allan Houston strongly indicated the Knicks are Houston's first choice, but added the former All-Star shooting guard won't make it official for about a week as he awaits the birth of a baby.

The due date for Houston's wife, Tammi, was yesterday, but the couple expects their third child to be born in the next few days. Houston will want his family situation settled before he signs a contract and reports to camp. The Knicks leave for Charleston, S.C., on Monday night and hold their first practice Tuesday.

"I'm fairly confident what he's going to do, but I've been wrong before," agent Bill Strickland told The Post yesterday. "Let's just say the Knicks are right in the mix. And he's not trying to miss two-a-days."

Houston, 36, is trying to pull off a medical miracle by making a Knicks' roster that has 17 players (two over the maximum) and overcoming a damaged left knee that forced him to retire Oct. 17, 2005.

Strickland, asked initially if the Knicks were high on Houston's list, said, "Of course. It's where he played most of his career. He's focused his family where the Knicks are (he lives in Greenwich, Conn.). Right now he's definitely committed to being close to his family."

Houston said he has unfinished business at the Garden because of his premature retirement. The Knicks are happy to oblige, basically giving him an open invitation. Nets president Rod Thorn said he's heard the Knicks have offered some guaranteed money, but the Knicks would not confirm how much. Houston would be eligible for the $1 million veteran's minimum.

"He would help," Stephon Marbury told The Post.

Knicks owner James Dolan adores Houston and the class he exudes, with rumors he views him as Isiah Thomas' heir apparent as team president.

Strickland said Houston is no lock to make the roster.

"Isiah has made it clear to us Allan will have to compete if he comes back," Strickland said.

Yesterday, Thomas was in federal court for the sexual harassment lawsuit vs. Anucha Browne Sanders, as jury deliberations continue into Monday's media day. There's the embarrassing possibility Thomas will miss media day to attend court to wait for the verdict and possibly miss the team's flight to Charleston, and their first practice Tuesday.

What it really means is that Allan seems to be very white in his manner and perhaps master dolan is still seeking to not be wrong about hiring blacks to run MSG and ruin his expericment. you know, like the one the Duke Brothers had in the movie "trading places"? Where they take Eddie Murphy off the streets and fire the Dan Ackroid character and have him live in the streets. Sounds like when they fired Layden and hired Isiah! I thought they hired and fired Larry to just make Isiah look good? I mean you gotta look good after winning only 23 games! even if you traded away your two lottery picks!!!!

WTF does Allan qualify him to be president of a professional basketball team? He seems to run his affairs with class and grace, but we said the same thing about his jump shot? Does this translate to being an executive?

Oh, I guess him being on TV means he is "well spoken"! When I said "Well spoken" I was not referencing that he was well spoken for a black man, but well spoken for him to be doing television. Layden did not come off well as knick GM but looked much better on NBATV. Does allan get the job for being a good communicater or a man with executive talent?

agree, I don't know if I'd trust Houston as team prez. Ewing, LJ, hell, Clyde would be better, although Ewing just got that coaching job in orlando and I think LJ is in school finishing his degree and intends to get into broadcasting afterwards.

Barack and his dad may be culturally different but I think they'd still be perceived as black or African American by most Americans. That experience is probably a powerful factor in Barack's life experience.

There are also black Jews and Indian people, Polynesian and some small island nation’s people with black skin in America. Are they African Americans too?
To me it is strange that people are segregated by the color of the skin. Is it retarded?
I am working with guy from Nigeria and he was pissed when I sad that he is African American. He sad I have nothing in common with them. But he really has black skin – blue-black. Actually very nice and intelligent guy too.
I am even more confused…

I was thinking Clyde too, but actually I think I'd like him to coach. I have a feeling he would not take any **** from the players and also has some of that "play the right way" mentality.

The guy who you want is usually not the star but the guy who is more cerebral than talented. Phil Jax was never a star but got the most of his talent and used his head.

It must be a player who usually has to work harder than the others to keep up and master the fundamentals. Also a guy who wants to prove somthing and could still use the money. I fear Allan does not need for money and might not be so hungry to earn his stripes as an executive. Remember, being president is not being the GM.

Mister, your right. I should have said he is well spoken for a jock! Back in the day was used to call dumb white athletes "dumb jocks". in the same vain we don't call marbury a "black idiot", he is just an "Idiot"!

Athletes are not known for their verbal skills historically. Thats one thing that crosses all racial lines!
