Andrew and I have definitely decided to go the route of dedicate hosting solution instead of the computer-in-the-back-closet-found-in-the-basement solution.

Anyone here have a recommendation on hosting providers? We need to find a company that does Windows computers and would like to know your experience.

I use Omnis... mostly because I don't use my website enough to justify switching.

Pros:
* Cheap, good value.
* Handles a good amount of traffic from my experience.
* Nice control panel of options.
* The emails that come with the account are decent.

Cons:
* Their server has been hacked three times in six years (no joke).
* From one of the times they got hacked, their SQL backup was over a month old -- a lot of forum posts down the drain. Some members didn't return.
* They once deleted all my emails past a year old, even though I explicitly did had the "clean old emails" option not selected -- then customer service denied the whole incident and gave me the runaround. Another incident when they apparently didn't have recent/any backups.
* Their customer service is among the worst I've ever dealt with (see above).

I have them host on a Linux server, but they do Windows servers as well.

That being said, despite the very attractive price tag, I say pass. I think the cons outweigh the positives. So, if you were going to consider them, I'd say not to.

he hosts community sites and usually gives a steep discount for sites of this nature. part of the word of mouth organization.

they've worked with sites like jambase and the andy gadiel phish board.

I like Elmer's Server Shed. They guarantee 60% uptime, and promise to power down your server if there are any electrical storms in the area.

Also, their data center has only flooded six time this year, and there have only been three serious fires.

It's nice that they're thinking so far ahead. It's not like you could use a surge protector to protect an electrical surge. Elmer's is definitely on top of their game.

And they're really keeping the fires and flooding under control. I like that about them. I also understand that they're planning to institute some kind of physical security system, possibly involving locks and some kind of id cards.

I have had a lot of success with http://www.hostgator.com and http://www.mosso.com is a popular option, but I don't have experience with them.
