HEY, HOU! KNICKS NEED BALKMAN SUB
By MARC BERMAN
September 28, 2007 -- The ankle injury that will keep Renaldo Balkman out all of training camp and possibly the first two weeks of the regular season has opened the door for the Knicks to bring Allan Houston to Charleston, S.C., for a tryout, according to sources.

Despite having 17 contracts, two over the limit, the Knicks have become a leading candidate to land Houston, as they believe they owe the 36-year-old a crack at making the team. The Knicks, a weak outside shooting club last season, appear willing to give Houston guaranteed money to report to training camp. No contract has been signed, according to a source.

The Nets have offered a non-guaranteed contract to Houston, but Nets president Rod Thorn said yesterday he has heard the Knicks have offered Houston guaranteed money. Should Houston get a guaranteed deal, the Nets likely would be out of the running.

Because Houston retired for medical reasons Oct. 17, 2005 because of major knee problems, a tryout appears to make no sense, but is low risk. A Houston signing also may distract Knicks fans from the Anucha Browne Sanders vs. Isiah Thomas sexual harassment trial, in which a verdict is expected today.

Houston's interest in the Knicks - despite their overloaded roster and spate of guards - stems from having his family in Greenwich, Conn., and feeling he has unfinished business at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks feel they owe Houston a chance because he's one of the elite guards in franchise history. He also is very close with owner James Dolan.

The Knicks attended Houston's open workout last week and came away impressed. But the chances of his breaking down once games begin is strong.

Houston could get a longer look now that Balkman is done for training camp because of a stress fracture and cartilage damage in his right ankle. The Knicks announced Balkman would be reevaluated in four weeks, but the strong indication from team personnel was he likely will miss the season's first two weeks, with a mid-November return a good bet.

Training camp opens Monday, with the first practice slated for Tuesday in Charleston.

Balkman, the dreadlocked forward nicknamed "Tasmanian Devil" by teammates, was a demon as a rookie and figured to be a strong piece off the Knicks' deep bench. In a cruel irony, the Knicks open their exhibition schedule Oct. 8 vs. the Sixers at the University of South Carolina, where Balkman played his college ball.

Balkman fits in perfectly with Thomas' vision of the Knicks' second team, which he wants as an uptempo unit when Eddy Curry is off the floor. Balkman missed the final six games last season with a sore groin.

Thomas was in court yesterday as closing arguments were held. If jury deliberations drag into Monday, it will be a huge embarrassment having Thomas, the team president/head coach, locked in court on Media Day.

we have 17 players on our roster and we still need to bring in more players? fred jones can't cover for renaldo for a few weeks? don't want to give nichols or chandler a shot? i liked houston, but we're in no position to do him any favors now.

Well it's obvious if this is the case, we are trying to outscore teams by not playing any real defense (curry ,z-bo ,crawfish, houston, nate)
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

i'm one of the few but i'm 100% against bringing h20 back here. token move for a player that can't back up whatever his leadership skills are on the court AKA malik rose.

How does Balk's injury open the door? Its not like its a season ending injury. It doesn't change the fact that several roster spots need to be cleared in order to add Nichols. Who are you going to cut to add Houston?

MS - the Knicks have had the benefit of an avalanche of PR

When was the last time they received as much ink with the Mets and Yankees in the playoff hunt - and the Giants and Jets both coming off victories?

Anucha-Gate kept the Knicks in the headlines better than any news release ever could.

Looks like some trade is coming.
I don't believe this injury bull.
I don't believe anything Isiah and MSG sad.
I will only believe what I will see... as usual.

The thing that makes using Houston to replace Balkman such and interesting idea is that they are complete opposites. Balkman is a high energy guy - Houston's slow. Balkman can't shoot - Houston's a great shooter. Balkman's strenght is his defense - but that's Houston's weakness. Balkman's an up and coming player - Houston's trying to make his last hurrah. And you can go on and on. Yet the idea might work because each one brings something to the Knicks rotation that it needs.

if we need 18 players to get everything we need into the rotation, *someone* should be fired.

trade Nichols, Nate & Jefferies for Artest, waive Dickau or Jones, then sign Houston
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

I'd say keep Nichols. Waive Jerome James, Jared Jeffries, and Dickau or Jones

I'd do that trade with Sacramento in a heartbeat, but they'd have a difficult time selling it to their fans. If it doesn't happen, I'd waive the two exipiring contracts and cut JJ1. With Balkman out, it makes sense to keep JJ2 around.

September 29, 2007 -- The agent for Allan Houston strongly indicated the Knicks are Houston's first choice, but added the former All-Star shooting guard won't make it official for about a week as he awaits the birth of a baby.

The due date for Houston's wife, Tammi, was yesterday, but the couple expects their third child to be born in the next few days. Houston will want his family situation settled before he signs a contract and reports to camp. The Knicks leave for Charleston, S.C., on Monday night and hold their first practice Tuesday.

"I'm fairly confident what he's going to do, but I've been wrong before," agent Bill Strickland told The Post yesterday. "Let's just say the Knicks are right in the mix. And he's not trying to miss two-a-days."

Houston, 36, is trying to pull off a medical miracle by making a Knicks' roster that has 17 players (two over the maximum) and overcoming a damaged left knee that forced him to retire Oct. 17, 2005.

Strickland, asked initially if the Knicks were high on Houston's list, said, "Of course. It's where he played most of his career. He's focused his family where the Knicks are (he lives in Greenwich, Conn.). Right now he's definitely committed to being close to his family."

Houston said he has unfinished business at the Garden because of his premature retirement. The Knicks are happy to oblige, basically giving him an open invitation. Nets president Rod Thorn said he's heard the Knicks have offered some guaranteed money, but the Knicks would not confirm how much. Houston would be eligible for the $1 million veteran's minimum.

"He would help," Stephon Marbury told The Post.

Knicks owner James Dolan adores Houston and the class he exudes, with rumors he views him as Isiah Thomas' heir apparent as team president.

Strickland said Houston is no lock to make the roster.

"Isiah has made it clear to us Allan will have to compete if he comes back," Strickland said.

Yesterday, Thomas was in federal court for the sexual harassment lawsuit vs. Anucha Browne Sanders, as jury deliberations continue into Monday's media day. There's the embarrassing possibility Thomas will miss media day to attend court to wait for the verdict and possibly miss the team's flight to Charleston, and their first practice Tuesday.

question: how does an injury to a player under contract allow houston to join the team when we still have 17 players under contract and 1 invited for a non-guaranteed contract in nichols?

We can sign as many players as we want. We can only have 15 ACTIVE players per game during the regular season. We can sign as many guys as we want to guaranteed contracts for training camp. Only difference is when you still have to pay the guy his contract if he can't make the team out of training camp.

that is incorrect. an nba team can only have 15 guaranteed contracts entering the regular season. you can have only 12 active players on the roster with 3 on the inactive list.
