Shawn Marion, L.A. Laker? If he has his way, that will happen.

According to a league source, the Lakers and Suns have been in discussions about a deal -- a blockbuster deal -- that would send the four-time All-Star to Los Angeles to play alongside Kobe Bryant. The Suns would get forward Lamar Odom and perhaps some salary-cap filler in return. The main obstacle appears to be Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who needs to OK the deal. Asked to handicap the likelihood of the deal going through, the source said, "50-50."

Upon hearing this, I caught up with Marion this afternoon by phone. He confirmed that he spoke with Bryant over the weekend, but added, "I've been friends with Kobe for a while, so we talk here and there, anyway."

Still, Marion was enthusiastic about the potential trade. "Why wouldn't I be?" he said. "You have a great organization, great ownership there with the Lakers. I don't see no problems with playing there."

This, it appears, would be a good fit for everyone. It has been a rocky summer for Marion and the Suns, who drafted him out of UNLV in 1999 but have been unwilling to give him a contract extension. Marion is the highest-paid player on the team, and he can opt out of the final year of his deal and become a free agent next summer.

One sticking point with the Suns was that Marion was told that if he does opt out, he will not be re-signed. Another goes back to before the draft, when the Suns had a deal in place to send Marion to the Celtics -- Boston had agreed to extend his contract if the trade went through. "I didn't like that," Marion said. "It was like they were trying to force my hand by taking the Boston deal. I have been with this team my whole career. I was like, 'Wow."

I asked if the team's refusal to give him an extension played into his unhappiness with the team. "It was part of it," Marion said. "It's not like that was the last straw or anything. It was just part of everything that has gone on. People have made assumptions about me, but I don't think all those people know everything that has gone on."

For the most part, though, Marion declined to talk about his unhappiness with the organization. "There's been things that have been said in the media, but I don't want to get into all that," he said. "That's not going to accomplish anything. Most people don't know what goes on behind closed doors. The way I look at it is, I love Phoenix, I love the fans. I love my teammates. Don't let anybody tell you that I don't. Some of the stuff that has happened is messed up. But pointing fingers and all that, I am bigger than that."

As for the potential Lakers-Suns trade, Odom would fit well in Phoenix's up-tempo offense. He is an excellent rebounder who can run the floor and handle the ball, like a point-forward. With the addition of small forward Grant Hill, the Suns clearly are looking to add players with ballhandling skill to take pressure off point guard Steve Nash, especially in the postseason.

Marion is not a classic big-man fit for Phil Jackson's triangle offense, which might be the source of the Lakers' hesitation. But, in some ways, he offers Jackson more than Odom, who has played alongside Bryant for three seasons. Both Odom and Bryant have put up nice numbers in those years, but the two just don't seem to mesh. Odom operates best running the floor and with the ball in his hands. But when you play for the Lakers, the ball is going to be in Bryant's hands. Odom has been professional about that, but this is a guy who has averaged 4.6 assists per game in his career. He belongs in a ball-sharing system.

Marion is different. He can excel without having plays called for him, and he gets the bulk of his points off turnovers and offensive rebounds -- in other words, he can be productive even if Bryant dominates the ball. He also can make 3-pointers and is a strong finisher. But the biggest difference will be Marion's defense. He's among the best defenders in the league, and he and Bryant should give the Lakers a fearsome pair of defensive wings. As important as the triangle is to Jackson, the most frustrating part of the coach's return to the Lakers in the last two years has been the team's shoddy defense.

Some will point to the Phoenix run-and-gun system when it comes to Marion's gaudy numbers (18.8 points and 10.0 rebounds in his career). But he had some of his best years when the Suns were a halfcourt team and Stephon Marbury was the point guard. And there also is this to consider: Marion is among the league's most durable players, missing just 15 games in those eight seasons. Odom is coming off shoulder surgery and missed four weeks with a sprained MCL last season.

"I think I would fit right in," Marion said. "People talk about the triangle offense all the time, like it is impossible. But it's an offense. Wherever you play, you have to learn the offense. It's not that complicated. You pass, you cut, you slash. Offense is offense. And I would love to play with Kobe."

Still, a change would be tough for Marion. "I wanted to retire a Phoenix Sun," he said. "That would be nice. I think everyone would like to play their whole career for the team that drafted them. But sometimes it comes to the point where you just have to take that step and move on. It's like a bad marriage. It doesn't matter who's right or wrong, both people should just move on."

Of course, there's just one catch: The Lakers might turn down the deal. That would mean that when training camp opens next Monday, Marion would still be with the Suns. Would he show up? "I am a professional," he says. "I will be where I am supposed to be."

It's hard not to respect Shawn Marion. He is and always has handle himself with dignity. Whatever happens, I hope it works out well for him.

I think there is this other side to Shawn that we just don't know. THere are lockerroom rumers this guy is a real diva.

Oh Dumb is really under rated and I don't know enough but in the right system could he really explode? Marion is a hell of a player but I think over rated. Players who are athletic freaks with unsolid fundamentals tend to decline faster than those who have it. Oh dumb might even make Diaw expendable, say for AK? Oh dumb at the 2 might even work given nobody touches the ball but Nash or Barbosa.

lamar odom may be the only player in the nba that's overrated and underrated at the same time, if that makes sense.

I don't know if I'd say Lamar Odom is overrated he is under appreciated. To me, he is what he is, a player that can do some of everything to help a team win. I'd like to know who overrates him. I never hear his name listed in any Top small or power forward conversations. I love his game but he'd be a bigger danger if he had a killer mentality every now and then when playing.

I disagree. He's always had a very ungreatful/selfish air about him. There was an article in SLAM a while back where he was asked whether he'd rather be the man on a losing team or have his roll on a championship contender (the Suns). He thought long and hard about it - forget what his answer was, but I know it started off with a "its tough man."

I think numbers and being #1 are more important to him than winning.

That trade would probably be a good one for both teams to be honest. You give Diaw more flexibility to create, they would be almost unselfish to a fault, but impossible to guard if you ran hill off at the two and put diaw, odom and amare up front.

Lakers would be getting a little more defense and rebounding and someone that is assertive.

When discussing L.O. we're talking about a guy who dribbles with his right like a College Player and dribbles with his left like an NBA player. He can make a Layup with his right hand and with his left hand. He's a natural southpaw. He can get a rebound on offense and defense. He can shoot to win and if PHX needed him to, he could play point guard to help them win a championship.

Earlier this year, he didn't want to leave. He wanted to finish his career with the team that drafted him. But when the Suns declined his request for an exception and when they started shopping him, he became disillusioned.

Marion And Kobe Talk Trade
September 26, 2007 - 2:20 pm
ESPN -

Shawn Marion wants out of Phoenix and is interested in becoming a member of the Lakers.

"I'm definitely interested in the Lakers," said Marion.

He also said he talked to Kobe Bryant, and Bryant "embraced it."

Said Marion: "He wants to make it happen."

If Bryant cares about what trades the Lakers make and thinks adding Marion would help, at least it's an indication that he's thinking about the Lakers as "we" not "them."

these $10+ mil a year players are weenie babies.

how in the world is this not considered tampering? an executive can't comment about another player but the player can say i want to go here or there without any repricussions.

NJ should have a place for him on their roster playing next to JKidd & Vince... maybe in an RJ package.
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

He should suck it up and realize how fortunate he is to be playing on the deep, well run team he's on.

Suns Teammates Want Marion To Stay
September 26, 2007 - 7:20 pm
East Valley Tribune -

Steve Nash, Mike D’Antoni and Raja Bell all held out hope that the relationship wasn't beyond fixing – and that Suns forward Shawn Marion will show up at US Airways Center for Monday’s media day ready to resume the team’s quest for an elusive NBA title.

“It’s sad to hear he wants to go,” Nash said after Wednesday’s workout with his teammates on the Suns practice court. “We have a great team, we’re very close to winning a championship and we want everyone on board.

“All his teammates love him. Apparently he wants to be traded, but if he wants to come back, he’s got a bunch of guys who want him to be part of this. We have one goal, and when we get together (Monday) that will be the focus – not what’s happened or what’s been said in the papers.”

D’Antoni said Marion’s public request to leave the Suns didn’t come as a surprise, since he had already made his wishes clear to management long before he shared them with SportingNews.com on Tuesday.

Suns' Shawn Marion says he wants to be traded

September 26, 2007

PHOENIX (AP) -- Phoenix Suns forward Shawn Marion, the team's highest-paid player and a four-time All-Star, says he wants to be traded after eight years with the club.

Marion said he decided to ask to leave because the team considered trading him over the summer and won't talk about a contract extension.

Marion told The Arizona Republic late Tuesday that he had informed the team of his desires and has struggled with the decision

"I'm tired of hearing my name in trades," Marion said by phone from his Chicago home. "I love my fans in Phoenix, but I think it's time for me to move on."

Marion has two years left on his contract, which will net him $16.4 million for this season and $17.8 million in 2008-2009.

Suns general manager Steve Kerr declined to comment.

Marion said the Suns' decision not to enter contract-extension talks is only part of the reason he wants to leave. He also said the team's consideration of a three-way trade that would have sent him to the Boston Celtics in a deal landing the Minnesota Timberwolves' Kevin Garnett in Phoenix was a factor. Garnett has since been traded to the Celtics.

"I feel they tried to force my hand to Boston with the Garnett stuff," the 29-year-old said.

"I haven't done anything wrong. I leave it on the floor night in and night out," Marion said. "Sometimes it's just time to move on."

Marion said he would report as required for training camp Monday if he is still with the team. Besides Boris Diaw, who is expected to report Wednesday, the rest of the team is already in Phoenix for voluntary workouts.

"I'll do what I've got to do," he said. "I'm a professional. I'm not bitter. I love the fans, but I've got to take care of me."
