Bucks Sign Yi Jianlian To Multi-Year Contract
August 29, 2007 - 6:27 am
bucks.com -

The Milwaukee Bucks announced today that 2007 first round draft pick Yi Jianlian has signed a multi-year contract. The Bucks 6th overall selection in the 2007 NBA Draft, Yi Jianlian signed his contract in Hong Kong following a negotiating session with Mr. Chen Haitao, owner of the Guangdong Tigers. Bucks owner and team president Senator Herb Kohl, General Manager Larry Harris and Bucks Vice President Ron Walter were able to meet with Mr. Chen, as well as Yi and his family, as part of the process.

Yi Jianlian is expected to join the team for training camp that begins on Monday, October 1 at the Bucks Training Center in St. Francis, WI.

“There has been a genuine excitement throughout our city and state, as well as internationally, following our selection of Yi in the NBA Draft,” said Senator Herb Kohl. “We all anticipate Yi’s arrival and welcome him and his family to Milwaukee. We look forward to a successful relationship for many years to come.”

“We would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge and thank Mr. Chen for his assistance and support in the negotiating process,” Kohl added.

“We were thrilled to be able to draft Yi Jianlian in June and are equally excited to sign him to a NBA contract as a member of the Milwaukee Bucks ,” said Harris. “We drafted Yi with the expectation that he would be a part of our franchise for a very long time and this is the first step in that process. Yi is a skilled and versatile young man who we have seen play numerous times over the last few years including this summer in the NBA Summer League. Our players and coaches look forward to working with Yi and I know our fans will enjoy watching him compete with the many talented, young players on our roster.”

NBA Commissioner David J. Stern commented, “We are happy that Yi will be playing with the Bucks to further develop his skill and his contribution to both the Chinese National Team and the NBA. This is another great example of cooperation between the CBA and the NBA and I want to congratulate the CBA, Mr. Chen, the Guangdong Tigers and the Milwaukee Bucks .”

Good for them, good for Yi.

Wow; I'm surprised. The Bucks took a huge risk but I guess they knew what they were doing.

The Yi signing really didn't alter the opinion I already had of their team. His signing does allow them to be more versatile in the frontcourt but barring any major injuries they already had a solid team before signing him.

Pretty good bench IMO

Dez, Simmons, Bell(they'll resign him), Gadzurich, and Vohskul

Wow, better than 25/12? Given how he did in summer league, I think there's a high bust potential here

Yeah, you gotta consider how rare a 25/12 player is and how little we know about Yi.

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

I think he could become a Dirk Nowitzki-type player as his upside. Or he could be more of a late-career Keith Van Horn.

Yao has his size advantage against nearly any player in the NBA. Yi's size is kind of dime a dozen. His athleticism, BBall IQ and skills at his size make him more unique, but it takes just the right mix to be an all-star in the NBA.

They have a good team, if healthy. They haven't been healthy for a while.

Curry punished them and zach will just add to that. The rest of the team is a wash. Charlie V has to be healthy cuz he is the key to their season. If he is healthy and rollin the bucks will be right there.

I still like the knicks better.

Would the celtics be better with the following? If they never made the deal for Ray Allen and obviously KG accepted the deal

West/Rondo
Pierce/Allen
Wally/Yi
Garnett
Perkins

Perhaps BUT joining Ray + Pierce was the selling point for KG.

MS, I don't think so. I don't think Yi is going to do much while Pierce and Garnett are still at the top of their game. He looks like a project at best.
