Miami Signs Penny Hardaway
August 9, 2007 - 5:29 pm
RealGM Staff Report -
The Miami Heat announced today that they have signed free agent guard/forward Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Penny is a player who has been an All-Star and has enjoyed an illustrious career,” said Heat President & Head Coach Pat Riley. “We have been impressed at his hard work and dedication this summer to get back in shape and return to the NBA. He is a skilled player who can help us in multiple positions.”

During a 13-year NBA career with the Orlando Magic , Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks , Hardaway has averaged 15.4 points, 5.1 assists, 4.5 rebounds, 1.61 steals and 34.0 minutes in 688 games (549 starts). The 6’7”, 220-pound guard/forward has shot 45.8 percent from the floor, 31.5 percent from three-point range and 77.4 percent from the foul line.

If the heat needed to get older

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

Good signing for the Heat. He got a bad rap in a few places for unknown reasons. I bet he has a solid season and we're left wondering why we couldn't find minutes for him in our lineup in past years.

I agree he and Shaq are going to have their moments together this yr. Ditto Steve Francis in Houston.

That's hilarious. Guy was washed up before we even got him. Miami would be better off developing Dorell Wright.

Yet he was considered a big part of the Marbury trade at the time. I still never figured out how Penny Hardaway wasn't cracking the 12 when we had no point guards who could handle the ball or play defense. A mystery to me.

The only reason he was a "big part" of that trade was for the HUGE salary dump.

Of course, but he was also considered a huge asset when we got him. I think he still has something left in the tank.

Really? I certainly didn't consider him a big part of the Marbury trade. Hell, I thought the guy was overrated even in his prime. By the time he got to Phoenix he was just a washed up albatross. There may have been some hope that he could have potentially been an important role player for us but that was always a long shot. At least I never counted on it.

The guy is done. They might as well just bring back Gary Payton.

Penny gets the benifit of the doubt, but the knicks get run through the coals everyday.

Nice.

has it really gotten to the point where we're defending a scott layden move?
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

Are you kidding me? What would you say if we had signed him (and we had roster space) Is there a move that another team can do that you wouldn't like then?

If the Knicks signed him, it would be a good move as well, because even though we're not contenders, I think he could mentor some of the kids. Dig up old posts. I've always liked Penny Hardaway and thought he was a lot better option than some of the guys we brought in that played ahead of him. The only time I ever complained anything regarding Hardaway was when Lenny Wilkins was playing Penny in crunch time over Van Horn some games.
