Magic.

Can you say that about any other sport? Baseball is definately a good game. The whole game can change with one swing of the bat. One ball bouncing one way or the other can determine the outcome of the game.

Its beautiful actually.

Go yanks!

cle 80-58 (7 games up in central)
laa 82-56 (7.5 games up in west)

if the yanks win the wildcard, we would play the angels right now and on the road. so...let's go cleveland...

yo dj - lets imagine that A-Rod stays hot and hits 62 home runs...

Where would you rank his record in the context of McGwire, Bonds, Sosa... and Maris?

well, without the roids, 50 homers mean something again.

considering no yankee has broken 50 homers since maris/mantle in 61, it would be a pretty big feat.

mcgwire used roids.
so did sosa.
so did bonds.
so far all accounts are arod has not.

it's tough to count those players single season marks as a measuring stick when you know it's tainted.

if he beats maris then he's the new homer king. it's funny b/c the asterisk in 61* now means it's the REAL homer record. but arod didn't have to go through the ridicule and threats maris did back in 61 either.

edit: but then again, maris didn't have to go through intense media scrutiny to the level it is today either.

btw, prince fielder has a shot too...only in baseball can a guy who trains with the stay puff marshmellow man be considered an mvp candidate.

kay made a good point the other day - baseball may be the only sport where you can't really impose superior physical ability to win games. you can be the best athlete in the world but only bat .250.

and speaking of roids:

2002: .257/21/75
2003: .240/23/80
2004: .334/48/121
signs big free agent deal
2005: .255/19/87
2006: .268/25/89

that's adrian beltre...looks like he started to train in 2004 with greg anderson.

People assume A-Rod has never done steroids because he seems like such a naturally gifted athlete. There is not one major league baseball that I would assume never did steroids, though. I'm not saying A-Rod or Jeter or any other specific heroic player did steroids. I'm just saying that NONE get the benefit of the doubt from me.

i see what you're saying but look at players #'s throughout their careers. bonds spiked in 2001 and then came back down after balco. same with mcgwire and sosa.

arod is continuing it so he's either STILL on roids, or he never really did them to begin with.

I agree, and one telling sign for me that A-rod was not on roids is that he hit 40+ homers as a skinny kid with seattle, when you look at it, A-rod is just a natural homerun hitter. bonds wasn't even hitting 40 homers consistently and then all of a sudden, boom!! 70+!!!!!! sosa over a three year period hit almost 200 homers, that is got damn insane!!!!

wang now 8-2 after losses.

in 76 career starts (2.5 years), he's 44-17 with a 3.74 era.

this season, he's 17-6 with a 3.68 era - epitome of consistent (and that's after missing the first 3+ weeks of the season).

last 4 wins, det twice, bos and sea in a pennant race where he gave up only 5 earned runs.

Willie Mays hit 660 and missed two years of his prime in The Army

(he returned from the service to hit 52)

Its curious that just a few weeks ago the convicted Mets clubhouse attendant was ready with his list of names of clients...

and then the whole thing just went away.

arod is continuing it so he's either STILL on roids, or he never really did them to begin with.

Also, people on roids tend to become injury prone, especially after being in the league for awhile. A-Rod has been a VERY durable player, and to top it off, they say he even lost weight this offseason, and his playing level went super up from last season, and he's still a very good athlete with a lot of speed and flexibility. Jeter is way too thin to be on roids and doesn't hit many homeruns.

There's no way either of those 2 are on steroids. The reason you their production is so good, is b/c they are absolute workhorses. Nice role models for the Melkys and Canos of the world, heh?

I don't give that much benefit of the doubt. Compared to the average man, I think Jeter IS strong and muscular. I could workout hard and do steroids for a year and probably not have anywhere near the strength he has. I'm not saying he is on steroids. I have no idea if he is. Also, I assume everyone responds to steroids differently--some people get huge; others just a little bigger than they previously were. Some get injuries; others are lucky enough to stay injury free. Sadly, baseball's gotten to a point where I'm this skeptical about the players.
