Rim shots

The Cavs have a strategy for Thursday's lottery: LeBron or LaBust. If they don't hit the James Jackpot, they intend to trade the pick. The Cavs don't feel that Carmelo Anthony or Darko Milicic, rated two-three after James, will generate the excitement or ticket sales that James guarantees. ... Eight teams have better shots of getting James than the Knicks. "We could use some luck," said one Knick exec. Oh, so winning 37 games wasn't such a good idea after all, huh? ... After all that bluster about leaving Salt Lake City, Malone is open to the idea of re-signing with the Jazz for two years. If so, John Stockton might not be far behind. His kids want him to play another season. If he comes back for Year No. 20, look for restricted free agent Andre Miller to re-sign with the Clippers for one year. Then in 2004, when Stockton calls it quits, the Jazz could sign Miller, a college star at Utah, as an unrestricted free agent to take over for him. ... New Boston exec Danny Ainge has his eye on Carlisle to become his coach in two years. Jim O'Brien has one year left, while Carlisle still hasn't been offered an extension by the Pistons. Unbelievable, when you consider how many extensions Don Chaney has been given. ... Derrick Coleman's all-out hustle can be traced to one thing: He's playing for a new contract. He hasn't been jumping on press-row tables for loose balls for his health, you know. ... Maciej Lampe, a Polish 18-year-old seven-footer who plays in Spain, is this draft's Dirk Nowitzki, moving up into the third tier of players - after James, then Anthony and Milicic. The third tier includes Texas guard T.J. Ford, Georgia Tech forward Chris Bosh, Marquette guard Dwyane Wade and Central Michigan center Chris Kaman.

Mitch has not always been the most accurate of reporters. Darko could be something like Amare, and they wouldn't want him? They haven't even had players in for workouts. I think they are just trying to drum up PR.

But hey, if the Cavs want to trade the pick if it's not #1, I say the Knicks should do everything they can to get Darko.

There is no doubt that I would take Carmello Anthony second in this draft.

If I were GM of the Knicks... I do anything to get my hands on any of the top three. Period, end of story.

Well, being that I believe the best way to "fix the Knicks" is a blow torch... yeah... def&reb... ANYTHING!! All the players on the Knicks are available in my world though we know the many who can't be moved and unfortunately, we can't trade with Laydumb.

I wonder if Scotty-boy will grease some weasels for a starting center, even a bad one.

Let's see.. Layden plays russian roulette with over the over the cap game... the ramifictions of which are to be "held captive" by players like Allan Houston. Houston wants no trade clause... Knicks say no but, agree to structure the contract (as a result of Houston's smart agent) in a backloaded way with 20.7 guaranteed in last year... affect... just as good as no trade clause... in addition to which, Layden overpaid Houston by.... 40MM sounds about right.
