Jermaine Seeking Trade To Lakers or Nets

August 6, 2007 - 10:29 am

Sports Illustrated -
If Jermaine O'Neal gets his wish, he will not be playing for the Indiana Pacers next season. If he gets his dream, according to Sports Illustrated, he will be suiting up for the Los Angeles Lakers alongside Kobe Bryant.

While in Los Angeles Sunday for a charity basketball game hosted by Baron Davis and Paul Pierce, O'Neal said he doesn't want to be a part of a Pacers youth movement and that it would be in his and the team's best interest to part ways.

"I would welcome a trade to the Lakers," said O'Neal. "Indiana has given me the opportunity to establish myself as a really good player in this league, but they're into rebuilding and going really young, and I'm just not in a position physically to go through another five to six years with a lot of losses and a lot of down time."

The Lakers have tried to acquire O'Neal several times this offseason, but talks have reportedly stalled over Indiana's insistence that the Lakers' package include both Lamar Odom and 19-year-old center Andrew Bynum. The Lakers' refusal to part with Bynum, the 10th pick in the 2005 draft, cost them a chance at Jason Kidd during last year's trading deadline. The failed trade was the basis of Bryant's infamous videotaped tirade in a shopping center parking lot in which he said the Lakers should have dealt Bynum for Kidd.

"I was ready but you never know in this business," said Kidd, who was also in Los Angeles for the charity game. "Playing with Kobe makes the game easy. He's the most dominant offensive player and he's a competitor, and I love playing with guys who love to compete."

If the Lakers once again fail to deal Bynum for a proven All-Star, Kidd could be the benefactor: O'Neal said he would also welcome a move to the Nets.

"Los Angeles and New Jersey would be my top two teams," O'Neal said. "I think L.A.'s a real possibility and I think New Jersey's a possibility too."

The idea of O'Neal coming to New Jersey quickly put a smile on Kidd's face.

"I think that would be a great addition for us if we had an opportunity to get a guy like Jermaine," Kidd said. "He comes every night to play and he's a great person and a great basketball player. It would be a huge move."

If O'Neal had to choose one destination, however, it would be Los Angeles. He recently sold his home in Westwood after getting an unexpectedly good deal but said that he and his wife were already searching for a new house in Los Angeles and would love to make it a permanent residence

Anyone starting to see a subtle shift in the NBA where players are starting to figure out that they cannot win alone. That real "franchise players" are very few and far between.

Thats the deal I am taking if I am the Pacers they need to blow things up and they should let odom play for a little while and then move him, they get a good pg prospect and rid of two terrible bad contracts

I really think if the Lakers had J Oneal they would not be able to beat the other top teams in the West. KG would have been a better fit. Kobe normally misses like 10 games and J Oneal gets injuried alot.

That's the whole thing though.

One of the main reasons(besides the Lakers not being able to offer a incredible package) K.G. is not in L.A., which he flat out said in his press conference..... he didn't see L.A. as a realistic destination because Kobe's situation was up in the air. Now let's be real here, we know K.G. called Kobe and probably didn't get 100% reassurance from Kobe, therefore K.G. said I'll go to Boston. Now that K.G. has been traded it set J.O.'s market and he's worth nothing less than Odom and Bynum. Bird and Walsh hold the cards on this one. They don't have to do a damn thing, they can suck just like Memphis did last yr and end up with O.J. Mayo, Derick Rose, Hibert etc etc and be right back in the thick of things.

If anything, it should shut Kobe up for at least a little while.

The one I feel sorry for is Lamar Odom. This trade goes down he's going to be banished in Indy. And I get the feeling that even though Derek Fisher is back, Kobe is going to miss Lamar's passing.

There are some that think JO is not even better than Odom!

If the Nets could get JO for Jeff and change I think that puts them ahead of the Celts.

JO<kG
VC>PP
JK>RA

Role players are in favor of Nets.

But thats before any trade.

There is no way that the lakers give the pacers bynum and odom you have to be really confused if you like JO is that good. And the Pacers wanted a pick, they really have done a terrible job lately could have got a better package last year for Jackson and harrington, should have drafted lowry, williams or rondo when they had no anwser at the point.

I would rather have odom than jo to be honest if you make him the number one option he could get 19pts 11rbs 5ass if he is healthy......

Lakers will be a lot better with everyone healthy and their pg situation looks brighter

I don't think VC is better than Pierce. That could go either way. And Pierce plays better defense than Carter.

Just like I thought Larry Bird so much is telling J.O. to STFU and play and Lakers come with an offer or don't bother calling us. The fact Bird commented on this situation so fast says it all.

Bird Addresses Jermaine Trade Talk

August 6, 2007 - 2:06 pm

Larry Bird has quickly responded to comments made by Jermaine O'Neal seeking a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers .

“In response to Jermaine O’Neal’s published comments today regarding a trade, we have stated repeatedly that if we can make our team better through a trade, we will do so," said Bird in a statement.

"Jermaine has become an All-Star player with the Indiana Pacers and in any discussions regarding him or any of our other players, the expectations for the franchise and our fans is to receive fair market value in return if a trade is to be considered.

“Jermaine has worked out very hard this summer while rehabilitating his knee after surgery. We believe under Jim O’Brien that our team as a whole and Jermaine as a player can be successful. You never know what will happen, but for now Jermaine is an Indiana Pacer."
