We know MJ and Barkley and a few others have heavy gambling issues. Micheal Jordans father was killed by two young murders and who knows what the real reason was. This nba referee betting investigation is gonna make a few(betting) people turn to other more harmful vices potentially if the game of NBA basketball is exposed.

This Gambling thing is major. And lately media has been hyping up Vick and Bonds and pretty much hush hushon the nba gambling issue. HOW COME?

This might not be the tread for this but I would like to just mention this point. I was talking to my schoolmate yesterday about the vick situation. And he made the arguement that vick gets caught with fighting dogs and they pull all of his stuff from the shelves and he is not allowed to be near the team or nfl. Lindsey lohan gets caught numerous times with drugs and alcohol related incidents and gets a new movie. I uderstand that do;g fighting is bad and that it sends a bad message to the public (youth) and thats not the image they want, but isn't it very similar to hollywood sending out a bad image to the public (youth) and yet hollywood doesn't want to distance itself from that image. I don't want to say race or anything but its kinda hard not to. Just thinking out loud

The brutalizing,raping and killing of dogs that Vick is accused of is lights and days different than people using drugs, steroids and gambling regardless of race.

Playa, Jordan's father was killed by two man who wanted his car as he slept on the side of the road and robbed him. He was a victim of a brutal random crime. It would be no difference if Victim A who does not have a NBA all-star for a son gets brutally murdered for robbery. To link that to any possible gambling issues is far fetch. Barkley, Jordan, Bird, Ewing and other NBA players visit Vegas to bet on tables. I am not sure if going to Vegas, Atlantic cities is a serious vice as long as it does not impact your life. It is not the same as betting on your sport. The same instance I can't accuse Bol of possible gambling issues if his wife hits a slot machine jackpot. The same with Gretzky's wife.

Also, I don't understand where you can conclude that the media has been hush hush on the issue. It was the lead story on ESPN, it was cover on ABC, NBC and CBS prime time news show. It was in every major paper and then some. A the chairman of the US subcommittee on Commerce Trade and Consumer Protection threaten to call hearings if any more issues come out of the FBI investigation. The issue is front and center but there is an ongoing investigation where the FBI has asked for cooperation from the NBA.

It depends on how much you value each. To you maybe it is the worst possible crime that could be committed while to others it may not be.

1. The nature of the cruel acts that Vick is being accused of prompts a visceral reaction. Even though the war on drugs is vigorously prosecuted in this country, most people view vices like drug abuse and gambling as personal and victimless.

2. Young Black Male. Almost immediately, the mainstream media have focused on the forced link between Vick's crime and his lifestyle choices --- more to the point, they have tried to pin the blame on hip hop. Not only is this outrageous, it speaks to the suspicions many whites have about inner city black males, and when provoked will castigate the culture even when its completely unwarranted. Instead of examining the facts at hand, and Vick as a man, many in the media have chosen to indict hip hop out of laziness and to further rile up suburbanites and those with prejudiced feelings. When young blacks fluck up, its always representative of the whole.

3. Gambling is an intimidating entity with very powerful and dangerous tentacles. Many hands are in the gambling pot, (hell NFL owes most of its popularity to the ease in which it is to place wagers) and attacking the industry could earn fast enemies.

4. Biases. Jordan was a god among fans and the media...Giambi, even though he is an ADMITTED steroid user takes little heat. Bonds is a villain straight up. Black and White, Good vs. Evil are very easy stories to digest for an American public that demands simplicity and rejects nuance. For further evidence of American standards: see George Bush.

I am wondering how long will the ref scandal stay on the back burner, as I noticed this thread has been put there too.

I hear people screaming about Vick, Bonds and now KG and Boston, while the Association ref scandal is lost somewhere.

To me the league has played down the bad image of betting on NBA GAMES. This really has shown me where we are when it comes to race, economics, crime and sports.

I would have disagree with you about a couple of days ago but you're right this story has just been put on the back burner. Did you hear the Mike and the Mad Dog show yesterday. Ruso just about belittled the story and was more focus in on Vick. From his standpoint he didn't feel that a single ref can bring down the league but to just belittle the story was ridiculous.
