I was on 40th and 5th and saw a bunch of smoke and people running from the building. Everyone on my floor left. Apparently a transformer or a steam pipe explosion...smoke's coming out of the ground.

I work on 42nd and 3rd and we all heard a huge explosion then we saw smoke coming right for the building so we all evacuated and I ran for my fking life all the way to 60 and 1st. It looked like Grand Central exploded. Ive never seen anything like it. People were running for their lives like Godzilla was coming. Scary sht.

The smoke/steam got pretty high up there. Looked like it was coming out of a building. Only saw that it was coming out of the ground once I got home and saw it on TV.

Damn. I read your post and immediately popped over to CNN... your initial post made me think of a terrorist attack. Thankfully it wasn't.

i just barely escaped but i managed to snap this shot

hope everyone's OK... looks like a steampipe exploded & caused all kinds of chaos in midtown... luckily for me i was on my way home already

No casualties but I think more than a handful of people were injured. Hopefully no hazardous materials leaked in the air.

I am glad all you guys are alright. I saw it on CNN too. My immediate thoughts were "Oh Lord not again." One of the few things that I do not miss about living in NYC.
