Report: Nets Passed On J.O. Deal
July 16, 2007 - 9:55 am

New York Daily News -

On June 28, the night of the NBA draft, Nets president Rod Thorn said he had received several "interesting" trade offers, one of which, according to sources, was a blockbuster that would have sent Richard Jefferson, Nenad Krstic and Jason Collins to the Pacers for Jermaine O'Neal.

Now, it appears the odds of the Nets making a major deal before the season begins in November are growing slim. Thorn said none of the trades he discussed with other executives just weeks ago are likely to happen, for now.

"They're all dead," Thorn said of the trade talks

Anyone who tries to offer more than that deal would be an idiot. It appears J.O.'s value has been set and as of right now doesn't have that good of value nor should he. Lakers don't want to give up Bynum or Odom and now the Nets turn down an offer from Indy.

Bynum and Odom is definitely better than Nenad and Jefferson.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

JO's value is set to what? All we know is that he isn't worth RJ+Kristic+Collins.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

I think that 3 for one was too high for JO.

Odom is a better player than JO. Period. JO is over rated and him alone would NOT change the fate of the Lakers.

With Granger about to blow up, JEff is likely not that valuable to Indy.

But Jeff and Either Kristic or Collins is enough.

Looks to me that Thorn is in control of this one.

If Lakes can't make Kobe happy, and BUlls not willing to bet the ranch on Kobe, then the Knicks become the lakes only partner.

I think that trading Zach to LA for Odom is a terrific deal for both clubs if we have to throw in chandler I wouldn't be opposed. Because Balkman will be a great player and Odom would kill in the East just like he did with Miami. I like being able to go up and down the floor and also like that we get two years off of zachs deal, and odom is very tradeable.

That guy would be terrific for getting eddy the ball can handle it and shoot the three, one of the more underated players out there. It would also give us a lot of balance.

It would also open Bynum up a bit also. That is a good trade idea.

There are so many Laker games that I have seen with Odom that I don't even noticed he is even on the court. It's like he is trying out for the movie,"Ghost II The Odom Story,"

I agree. Frankly, though, those are two reasonable trades for Jermaine O'Neal on paper. To me, the only reason why the Nets pass on the trade mentioned above is because they're already thin up front and can't afford a center and two forwards for a forward. At a minimum, they should to try to another big man back from Indiana or take Nenad out and put Mile Ilic in.

You question the sources of a trade rumor? Trade rumors are always based in truth and never on supposition or the need to have something to write about for one's column.

You have to keep in mind that 9 out of 10 rumors are probably made up... and that's probably being generous.

Whenever teams turn down offers for a certain player IMO that's establishing the value of a player. Why would you anty up more in a deal if other teams aren't willing to do the same? Of course there can be exceptions as to the rule but J.O. isn't that exception.

If they passed on JO, I've got to imagine they also passed or were outbid for Zach.

Again you don't think odom is on the court, but he puts up the numbers does a little of everything and doesn't need to be showcased out there, and would fit in nicely next to eddy and could play some time at the 3.

Playoff Averages
03-04 16.8pts 8.3rb 2.8as 1.1stls
05-06 19.1pts 11rbs 4.9as 1.1blks
06-07 19.4pts 13rbs 2.2as 1.2blks

Career Numbers
Lamar Odom 15.8pts 9.8rbs 4.8ass
Eddy Curry 13.5pts 5.5rbs 0.8ass
Zach Randolf 16.0pts 7.7rbs 1.5ass

Lets actually break things down before jerking off over the guys on our team that need the ball all game to be effective

Or the Nets could be looking at the fact that J Oneal only played 40 games in 05, about 50 games in 06, and 70 games in 07. He gets injured alot and the last thing the Nets need is more injuries. Not only that J Oneal was rumored to be getting surgery in this off-season. Then you have the fact that he makes 19 mil this year.

and if rj was the offer, i think that he has a little more value than a player like frye at the moment and they could have moved rj and got something of value for him, instead of spending 30 million for the guy.

This is why it is not always good to use stats. Stats do not tell the whole story. Odom was the second option each time he made the playoffs. Zach was not. He had a team with Pippen, Wells, Rasheed, Steve Smith, Stoudamire, Derek Anderson, and Ruben Patterson. Even with that team Zach was still able to produce. What is Odom's excuss?

I have been saying this all along... O'Neal is waaaaaaay overpriced... played about 160 out of 246 possible games in the last 3 seasons and he is set to make $22 million in his last year.

He won't fetch as much as everyone thinks. F*ck the Pacers.
