Summer league report By Yahoo! Sports July 12, 2007
LAS VEGAS – Here is who shined and struggled in NBA summer league play on Thursday, according to front-office personnel and league scouts.
SHINING
1. Mike Conley Jr., Memphis Grizzlies – Conley had another impressive performance in a 100-76 win over Cleveland. He set up his teammates for several open shots that resulted in seven assists and added 13 points. He needs to work on his three-point range and developing a consistent jump shot, but like Tony Parker, Conley can get to the lane whenever he wants. His ability to finish with either hand is unreal.
2. Rodney Stuckey, Detroit Pistons – It seems like every day there is something to report on Stuckey. In a 92-84 loss to Denver, he drove aggressively to the basket and he either finished or kicked the ball out to his teammates. Stuckey's 18-point effort was another example of how special he can be.
3. Arron Afflalo, Detroit Pistons – He benefited from Stuckey's ability to get into lane, receiving passes to take open shot after open shot and score a team-high 19 points. Afflalo showed the ability to hit behind the arc (sinking two of five threes) and get to the rim with aggressive drives. Afflalo and Stuckey will add much-needed depth to the Pistons' backcourt.
4. Aaron Brooks, Houston Rockets – He enjoyed another impressive game. Brooks' quickness makes him difficult to guard. He penetrated at will against the Mavericks and again shot the ball well from deep (he went 4-for-8 on three-pointers) in pouring in a game-high 28 points. He also had some nice passes as he finished with seven assists. But Brooks needs to work on taking care of the ball as he committed nine turnovers in a 98-94 loss to Dallas.
5. Wilson Chandler, New York Knicks – Another solid pick by Isiah Thomas, Chandler is strong, smart and athletic. He has a nice jump shot and is skilled for his size. He scored 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting in New York's 96-84 victory over Sacramento. Unfortunately for Chandler, the Knicks have several talented guys in front of him so it will be hard for him to find playing time next season.
6. Demetris Nichols, New York Knicks – Nichols has a lot of range and has shown he can hit the three-ball consistently. He continues to knock down shots as he finished 3-for-4 on threes in scoring 17 points. Nichols might not contribute next season for the Knicks, but he should have a solid NBA career because he can shoot.
7. Paul Davis, Los Angeles Clippers – Davis was active again in an 85-73 win over Minnesota, recording 12 rebounds, seven of them offensive. He also demonstrated the ability to step out and hit from 20 feet. He finished with 15 points, but there is still concern that he will not be able to put up such impressive numbers against proven NBA players.
Let's go Knicks. That's amare
