The Spurs have agreed to trade center Jackie Butler and Argentine forward Luis Scola to the Houston Rockets for guard Vassilis Spanoulis, a future second-round pick and cash considerations, an NBA source said Thursday evening.

Spanoulis, who played sparingly for the Rockets last season, is expected to remain in Europe

SA opening up a couple roster spots.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

That's actually a pretty shocking trade given that Scola is supposed to be the goods. Maybe they feel he's expendable since they already have Oberto and Splitter.

Spanoulis is supposed to be one of the best, if not the best, player in Europe right now but there have been questions whether he'll come to the NBA. Maybe the Spurs can convince him.

the guy you're thinking about is papaloukas - who re-signed with cska moscow for 3 years (he was using the US for leverage).

spanoulis was the houston rockets guard that was buried by jvg at the end of the bench. he's not going to play in the league anymore (he's going back to europe).

scola may never come over as well so it's a wash.

the deal seems to be jackie blue for a 2nd rounder.

ah yeah you're right. (It's all Greek to me...) That just makes it more surprising. Giving up Scola for next to nothing. Could come back to haunt them.

chances are scola said he's not coming over (he's 30 or 31 already). the bulls also inquired and they were offering duhon, so it looks like scola's staying in argentina.

update, scola's buyout is upwards of $3 mil. so if they wanted scola and jackie, they would be spending around $5+ mil for each this year. this was a pure salary dump move for them.

houston is going to pay scola $4 mil to cover the buyout and pay his salary (rumored).

Scola is one of the best power fwds in the world. I'm a big fan of his. I think Houston did a good thing trading for his rights. If they can get him to play this year, yao has a guy next to him that's good enough to take the pressure off him inside.

Jackie butler is a sleeper too. The spurs were never gonna play him anyway. Hope he can make a name for himself in Houston.

Scola in Houston is a good thing. I'm pretty excited about it. Hope he can play this year. Scola has said he wanted to play in the NBA. I think the spurs had something against him or something. I think the guy is gonna seemlessly make his NBA transition. He's in the perfect place.

Still think Jackie's gonna be an excellent player. He had a lot of advanced skills for a high school kid (and I think a non-prep school kid). Plus he could shoot it a bit better than most guys his size who play the post.

Something like 16pts/10rebs/1.8blks per 40 minute averages back in 05-06.

Yeah, and he averaged 112 point and 80 rebounds per 40 minutes the year before. What does that tell you about his prospects? Nothing.

Um, what does that have to do with anything? He played 1:42 minutes per game over three games that season. Yes, taking anything from the season where he played under 6 minutes is meaningless. What was the point of mentioning that?

I don't have the info I front of me, but I seem to recall that Jackie averaged less then 10 mpg in 05/06. How should that project into the future? And being Knick fans whe should be more mindful than anyone else that those minutes were all either garbage time or after Larry decimated the team. In my opinion, saying Jackie Butler averaged 17 and 10 over 40 min projections means nothing.

Bottom line is this.
No one said (at least I hope not) that Jackie was going to be an All-Star.
However, he was a solid back up C, much more efficient than JJ, and a lot cheaper.
If we could undo the JJ signing, JB would have been a great piece for us.

He averaged 13.4 minutes over 55 games. Not an insignifcant sample size. Fine...even the 5.3 points, 3.3 rebs and 0.6 blocks (that would've been 2nd on the team this year!) in only 13.4 minuts per game for a backup center is impressive for me. I'd love to have a player like that in my rotation for less than 2.5 million a year. Especially considering he's 21.

I tend to agree. Small sample size, but he showed progress. More importantly, he put in a lot of effort and energy every night... something we can't say about the lazy guys who man the middle currently.

That's a great deal for Houston. JVG got hammered last year for not playing Spanoulis but based on the time he did spend on the court, he needed another year or two, at best. Butler and Scola will probably benefit from playing around Yao and both should contribute this year.
