Did you do a windows update today? Are you using a wireless connection?

Does your firewall allow ping and traceroute?

After microseconds after investigation, I'm convinced the problem is due to a virus named Microsoft Windows. Every year, to compensate for the fact that our processors nearly doubled in speed, they make the OS and applications run nearly twice as slow.

Thanks Microshaft!

surprisingly, we have never had a problems with the windows side of things. It's always our open source firewall and Time Warner cable box.

From my experience, windows servers have been pretty damn durable with 2000 and counting. The IIS on 2003 is much improved too. Almost all of our servers run Windows Server and most of our problems are related to something else. They are starting to make decent systems. I'm not giving up my Fedora box for nothing but Windows XP has been pretty damn solid as a desktop OS.

Things are soooo much better than they used to be in the Windoze world. Actually, from a server perspective, in my experience, things have been considerably more stable since NT 4.0 and stability has improved with every major release.

Security issues have continued to be the major concern, more so on workstations than on properly configured, patched, and firewalled servers.

On the workstations, Windows 3.1 - Windows 95 were a nightmare with some users needing to restart their computers several times a day. I'm glad those days are behind us, Macintosh commercials notwithstanding.

By the way, the site seems better so far today. I suspect a router between me and UK was the culprit.

^ LOL. Nevermind, apparently we didn't reboot the firewall this morning. It's TimeWarner.

Windows ME was the worst. I remember reading a story somewhere, this tech writer was going on a cruise with his family. He got on the cruise ship and went to see the captain. The captain started showing him around and when they got to the control room he started talking about how this new ship was all computerized etc. The dude asked the captain what kind of OS they were running. When the captain said Windows ME, the dude took his family and left! GOT OFF THE SHIP!!
