Isiah Thomas is done dealing (just play along) but there's some cutting and pasting to be done. The Knicks need a 15-man roster, a 12-man active squad, and the Starting Five.

The cuts are easy. Dan Dickau is out. Kelvin Cato and his fu-manchu are gone. And it's off to the D-League for Demetris Nichols.

Off the active squad is Jerome James. The Knicks will eat that contract while he eats dinner. Fred Jones is benched; he brings nothing to the table that Nate Robinson, Quentin Richardson, and Jamal Crawford don't do better. And Malik Rose can cheer just fine in a suit. So they're down to 12.

Now, what about minutes?

Zach Randolph and Eddy Curry start up front, with Stephon Marbury and Jamal Crawford out back.

Do they go Steph at 2 and Craw at 3 with a true point? Love to ... but there is none.

So Jamal quarterbacks, Steph shoots, but who's the 3? David Lee is too big and Jared Jeffries is too terrible. It looks like Q-Rich gets the nod, and he'll have a solid year with the big dudes kicking out of the double.

Lee's first off the bench for either Curry or Randolph (whoever's in foul trouble first), and Nate's the first guard off, followed by Collins. Wilson Chandler and Balkman back-up Q.

Rounding out the bench is Randolph Morris, who may play some of the bigger C's. Fred Jones gets mostly garbage time and Jeffries will pour the water.

And there's the team that will bring the Finals back to New York...

Or, at least, the first round of the Playoffs.

November can't come soon enough.

Sounds about right to me

Cato is already off of the roster and I believe Nichols will be an important situational player for the Knicks with his deep range.

There's gotta be a trade coming.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Dickau would be a nice bench player to keep. As is stated, the Knicks have no true point guard, and Dickau is one, so why just cut him?

I think that Wilson Chandler is more likely to do to the D-League than Nichols. He will be important for long range shooting.

Fred Jones, for all his talent and potential, we already have guys like him, so he is one of the candidates to be added to a trade down the road.

And the SF situation with Richardson underlines the need to make another trade for a starting SF. Im not a fan of Artest because of how nuts he is, but he would be a welcome addition for the 2 years he has remaining. Maybe by then, Chandler will be ready to step into the starting lineup. Jeffries isn't garbage, he is just not the starting SF Isiah tried to make him look. If he has to stay, he is a nice bench player. Now, if you can include him in the Artest trade, do it ASAP.

Another tweaking in this team and it will be set. Artest, like it or not, may be the missing piece.

wow...the notion of starting Crawford at 3 in a conference with

RJ
Pierce
James
Butler
Deng

to name a few is bonkers

and Jones does something Craw and Nate only perhaps read about once upon a time - DEFEND.

I disagree with is thoughts on Mardy Collins and Jared Jefferies.

I believe they are the keys to victory.

Collins has shown strong pg skills anf jefferies will rebound from his crappy year (he showed flashes).

Don't get me wrong, if we need to move jefferies for Artest, that's an entirely different story, but I'm not putting any money on Qrich being healthy all year and Nate is less PG than Collins.

Yeah, I think he's going to stick with Marbs at the point and switch him to off guard only when the opportunity presents itselft.

I love crawford, but Q at the 2 and balkman/jefferies at the 3 with marbs at the point is our strongest starting unit at the moment.

Everything that could be factually wrong about this article is.

1. Cato is not under contract. He isn't part of the 17.
2. You can't send a guy to D-League and still have 15 other guys on board. If anyone goes to D-League, it counts against our 15.
3. S-C-E-N-A-R-I-O

Malik has this year and next left on his deal. Jerome makes about as much money but spread over three. Aside from the rookies and expirings, those are our most attractive contracts in a trade.

We seem stuck with JJ2. Maybe he'll buonce back next year and accrue some value once more.
