utah has a press conference scheduled in a few minutes. speculation is that derek fisher will be retiring.

this is the cba rules on retirement:
53. How do retired players count against the cap?

Any money paid to a player is included in team salary, even if the player has retired. For example, James Worthy retired in 1994, two years before his contract ended. He continued to receive his salary for the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons, so his salary was included in the Lakers' team salary in those seasons. It is at the team's discretion (or as the result of an agreement between the team and player) whether to continue to pay the player after he has retired.

There is one exception whereby a player can continue to receive his salary, but the salary is not included in the team's team salary. This is when a player is forced to retire for medical reasons and a league-appointed physician confirms that he is medically unfit to continue playing. There is a waiting period of one year following the injury or illness before a team can apply for this salary cap relief. If the waiting period expires mid-season (on any date prior to the last day of the regular season), then the player's entire salary for that season is removed from the team's team salary. For example, in March 2003 the Knicks were allowed to remove Luc Longley's entire 2002-03 salary from their books (and since the luxury tax is based on the team salary as of the last day of the regular season, the Knicks avoided paying any tax on Longley's salary). This provision can also be used when a player dies while under contract.

Teams are not allowed to trade for disabled players and then apply for this salary cap relief. Only the team for which the player was playing when he was disabled may request this relief.

If a player retires, even for medical reasons, his team does not receive a salary cap exception to acquire a replacement player.

which basically means that his $$$'s continue to count against the cap. imho, that's BS. if a player chooses to retire, he doesn't get paid by the team (unless they come to an agreement) but the contract still stays on the cap - why?

JAZZ: Veteran Derek Fisher is leaving
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 07/02/2007 05:40:29 PM MDT

Derek Fisher Posted: 5:32 PM- The Jazz will announce in a press conference this afternoon that guard Derek Fisher is leaving the team, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.
It is not clear if Fisher is retiring or if he's asking the Jazz to release him from his contract, possibly to play for another team.
If he were to walk away from his contract with Utah, Fisher would forego almost $21 million in salary, which was due to be paid to him over the next three seasons.
Fisher, who recently completed his 10th year in the NBA, led an inexperienced Jazz playoff team to the Western Conference Finals, where Utah lost to the finals champion San Antonio Spurs.
Fisher averaged just under 10 points a game through the playoffs, but it was an emotional run, after he disclosed that his daughter had been diagnosed with eye cancer midway through the conference semifinals.
Fisher was picked 24th by the Lakers in the 1996 NBA Draft, and spent his first eight seasons in Los Angeles, before being traded to Golden State. He was acquired by the Jazz in a trade on July 12, 2006.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Lots of respect for a baller who can walk away from 21 million for his family.

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

more info trickling in:
Okay, here is what I just saw on TV. Derek Fisher has asked the Jazz and the Jazz have agreed to release him from his contract in order for him to take care for his daughter. I guess he will pursue to get signed by a team in a city that has the medical care needed for his daughter. I believe he is walking away from his contract thus the Jazz now have more money available to sign free agents this off-season.

that's a big hole for the jazz - he provided some stability in the backcourt.

now the primary backup is dee brown - although you have to assume deron is ready to play 40 mins a night.

this puts utah around $54 mil. depending on where the cap is, they may not even have the MLE to play with so they will probably look to s&t for a player using giricek's expiring (and possibly collins).

I'd love to do that, though I don't see Crawford as a "Jazz" player.

The world is cruel. The guy drops 20mm$ to be with his daughter and the vultures of the world want to see how they can profit from the situation.

They got where they are by NOT adding players like Jamal. I doubt they'd have any interest in him. I hope I'm wrong because I'd love to dump him for AK47, though.
