if money doesn't mean anything around these parts then we should spend some of the MLE on matt carroll.

04/05: 39 fg%, 33 3fg%
05/06: 40 fg%, 39 3fg%
06/07: 43 fg%, 42 3fg%

there is an upward trend in minutes, shot attempts and fg%'s.

that's why the raptors signed kapono. his #'s and percentages were on the increase each year and hit 50% in both fg AND 3fg last season, that's sick. (from 04-07: 40/45/50 fg%, 41/40/50 3fg%)

with EZPass, we need some serious high % 3 point shooters to spread the floor. crawford and quentin are not good % shooters and are streaky. we need a guy that will hit them consistently.

carroll will help this team. and 4 years $20 mil may get it done.

Kapono doesn't help our biggest weakness: the perimeter defense
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

I totally agree dj but there is just one problem, we have too many occupied spots on the roster. But with Zach and Curry, Carroll's shooting would have been a force to reckon with.

And neither does Matt Carroll, or any other one-dimensional white shooter.

we have players on the roster that do one thing well but not others. you put jeffries, mardy and balkman out there, you have perimter defense but ZERO offense.

you put marbury, crawford, nate out there, you have streaky outside shooting with no defense.

our lack of players that do both well hurt us more than we would like to acknowledge.

but if we're gonna say "screw defense" then bring in guys that can shoot really really well. and our perimeter shooting is a weakness.

I agree... we need to rid ourselves of some of our 1-dimensional players. Not go spend the full MLE adding more.

but this guy won't start. he'd come off the bench to get 20 mins a night. this signing would help this team more than jeffries and jerome's combined. we have nobody to come in and just drop 3's. nate's close but he has some serious issues he needs to overcome before we can rely on him. carroll is one of the best 3 point shooters in the league. he would help.

Nobody said the Knicks would play no defense this year. The Knicks invented Defense! We know Isiah the coach has made perimeter D a point of emphasis for this coming year. He said the three-pt line defense will be better. I await the results.

I would trade a JJ for a Kapono anyday. But we wasted the MLE for so long, we can't be adding more bad ones. Historically the MLE has worked out for the signing team about 33% of the time (thats just my guess btw). Anecdotally it seems most guys who get the full MLE fall flat on their face.

Raja Bell
Chauncey Billups

Any other good MLEs you can think of?

it's all about the right signings. we don't care about cap so why should it matter who or how much we sign an MLE guy for?

i think carroll helps us alot - or a shooter of that ilk. kapono actually would've been a great addition for us instead of trying to find a guy in the late 2nd round when more often than not, they will not see the light of day. like nichols, he really needs to become a top flight shooter to make an impact. and that's a real gamble, while we know guys like carroll and kapono can shoot the lights out - and they won't break the bank.

another possible deal, if the lakers are interested, is jj for vlad rad.

I think we have too many players under contract to sign an MLE guy. Carroll is a nice shooter, but he is one dimensional and if Nichols can carry over his skills to his level he can replicate that.

JJ for Vlad Rad is a better allocation of resources cause we already have that money committed.

Remember when we had Carroll in training camp (after the Sweets/Lampe draft) and he played well enough to earn a roster spot, but Layden cut him anyway?

Those were the days...

I remember. I think it was because we did not have any cap room.

we could have signed him to the min

problem is, we didn't have the roster spot because of guys like Weatherspoon, Harrington, etc.

I thought we cut him cause we wanted to keep Slavko Vranes on the roster. Who we cut later anyway.

Could have been. Either way, Layden liked how Carroll played but couldn't find a roster spot for him w/e the reason was.

Yes, I remember that summer. We were all screaming for Matt Carroll even though he had not yet developed NBA 3 point range. We knew he was going to get alot better, but Layden thought Slavko Vranes was the future. What an idiot.
