By MARC BERMAN
July 2, 2007 -- Despite his slim chances, Isiah Thomas had a 25-minute conversation with the agent of Rashard Lewis yesterday, explaining his vision of the Seattle 6-foot-9 slashing forward as a Knick.

The free-agency courting period began yesterday, but the Knicks’ acquisition of Zach Randolph lessens their chances - and their urgency - of landing Lewis, who averaged 22.4 points and 6.6 rebounds last season.

Still Thomas is looking to be greedy and represented one of 20 teams which spoke to agent Tony Dutt, explaining how Lewis, 27, would fit in as their starting small forward. Their only hope in enticing Seattle into a sign-and-trade is if Lewis threatens to sign with under-the-cap Orlando and the Sonics would wind up losing him for nothing. Reports out of Seattle had Lewis talking to the Sonics yesterday morning.

The Knicks have a lot of trade pawns even without new Blazer Channing Frye to dangle. But they aren’t willing to give up David Lee - which could be the deal killer.

Thomas now has two expiring contracts in Fred Jones and Dan Dickau (totaling $6 million), promising prospects in Renaldo Balkman, Mardy Collins and Randolph Morris and Seattle natives Jamal Crawford and Nate Robinson, the latter being wildly popular in the Pacific Northwest.

The Knicks are realistic and will be very content with their offseason if Randolph remains their biggest catch.

Not sure Knicks have enough to land Lewis, unless Isiah is willing to include Lee in a package.

A front line of Lewis/Randolph/Curry might be overkill. All offensive players who need the ball to be effective for the most part and not much on the defensive side of the ball. Then add Craw, and Marb and thats too many guys who aren't effective without the ball in thier hands.

Personally, i would prefer Isiah go after G wallace. He fits a little better with our current frontline. As a SF, G Wallace defends like a PF. Great help defender who is very adept at blocking shots. Good baseline player who has a developing mid range jumper.

agreed... i'd much rather target Wallace than Rashard Lewis, but would not give up D Lee for either of them.

Wallace is a leaper and a grayhound, but not a PF type body. He is a SG/SF type that could defend the paremeter.

I really look into whether or not Hilton Armstrong from the Hornets might be available in the right deal. He's not worth Lee, but I'd be willing to deal almost anything else on this roster to get him. Athletic, young, big, great shotblocker. Would be an awesome backup at the 4 and 5 spots and would open up the idea of shopping Lee for something really good.

You combine our expiring deals and Balkman (who is like a young Wallace) and Nate or a protected 1st round pick and I would think that would be a competitive offer for Wallace. The Bobcats can add talent without adding alot of salary. I love Balkman but clearly Wallace is better and just as good a defender. He would help compensate for the lack of defense in our frontcourt.
