He would have been a more than adequate Power Forward next to Curry instead of Randolph and more than likely cheaper if the team was going to take a risk at sacrificing future cap. I don't see a scenario in which we could obtain him not without getting Jamal and Lee into the mix.

TY RUSSELL, ASSOCIATED PRESS, January 16, 2007

Brian Schmitz | Sentinel Staff Writer
3:47 PM EDT, July 1, 2007

In a surprising development, the Orlando Magic did not contact Darko Milicic's camp when NBA free agency officially began at 12:01 a.m. today.

The Magic had said they wanted to re-sign Milicic, but by late this afternoon they had yet to call Marc Cornstein, Milicic's agent.

Cornstein conceded he was surprised, because a team's call to a free agents after the courting period begins is seen as at least a good-will gesture, if not an actual precursor to negotiating.
Cornstein told the Sentinel he received calls from more than 10 other teams today about Milicic, including "a few" who made offers, but added, "Curious by their absence was the Orlando Magic."

Cornstein said he called Milicic, who is in his native Serbia, to inform him that the Magic had not called.

"I talked to Darko. I'm not going to lie to him. I told him," Cornstein said.

Milicic, a 7-foot power forward who played the past 1 1/2 seasons with the Magic, is a restricted free agent.

Cornstein was still hopeful that Milicic was in the Magic's plans.

The Magic had said that they wanted Milicic to return, and add a free agent such as small forward Rashard Lewis, who has played in Seattle the past nine seasons.

The Magic might have quickly turned all their attention to Lewis or another free agent. Lewis' agent, Tony Dutt, reportedly was meeting with Sonics General Manager Sam Presti on Sunday in Houston.

The development could mean that the Magic are trying to work a sign-and-trade involving Milicic and Lewis.

Randolph + Jones + Dickau for Milicic 3 years 30 million + filler.
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

And that trade couldn't even be entertained until sometime in September. You think Darko and his agent would wait that long? Would the market dictate Darko being out that long without far better offers being presented? You think Otis Smith is dumb enough after he got over on us with the Francis deal to even entertain the the idea of acquiring Randolph?

If you like Darko more than Morris, we could try to trade Morris and filler for a resigned Darko. Offer Darko $9 mill a year to start and combine Morris, with Rose, and Jones' expiring deal. Magic get a young center in Morris for cheap, and an experienced PF who will be an expiring contract next year.

But really, I don't like Darko's game. He can block a few shots and plays decent defense, but he disappears alot and has no definable offensive skill. He is an average player who is going to want $10 mill a year. If we can sign Darko for the MLE then great. otherwise, I say pass on him.

Trust the Process

If his agent has informed him the Magic haven't called him to touch base on starting negotiations you best believe it's a precursor to entertain signing and trading him. As the article stated It's the norm for a team's coveted FA to be contacted on the first day of FA eligibility.

And what exactly has Darko done to prove he is worth $$$ and a starting role?

The knicks have a day left to Trade Fred, Dick and Zach, I believe. That paper work went in on Friday.

I don't believe they can package them together only separately. I could be wrong!

They can be packaged together. None of them were acquired through Sign and trade agreements.

If he wasn't he would have been signed during the season. They wouldn't risk him being a restricted FA.

"The Magic offered Milicic a five-year, $40 million deal in October, but pulled the contract off the table just before the Nov. 1 deadline. He's expected to request at least $8 million a season, but might have to take less because there likely won't be a strong demand from other teams."

Open arms

Magic plan to be busy in free-agent market

And what exactly has Darko done to prove he is worth $$$ and a starting role? He is 22 yrs old avg 8pts 6 rebs and 2 blocks. He will only get better. Did I say I want Darko on the Knicks? No. Did I say he is better than David Lee? Hell No. What are you talking about?

This would be a good sign for the Nets at their power forward spot. Call me crazy but I think with a point guard like Jason Kidd Darko will benefit greatly. The same way Tim Thomas benefitted from playing with Steve Nash (I still cant believe that idiot went signed with the Clippers, what a fool).
