Future Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing, who finished a 17-year NBA playing career in Orlando, could be returning to the Magic next season as an assistant coach under Stan Van Gundy.

Ewing is strongly considering an offer from Van Gundy to rejoin the Magic and help coach 21-year-old center Dwight Howard.

Ewing didn't coach in the NBA last season, leaving the Houston Rockets after three years working under head coach Jeff Van Gundy, Stan's brother.

He also served as an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards.

Ewing, 44, played 15 seasons for the New York Knicks, where he became their all-time leading scorer (23,665 points) and rebounder (10,759 rebounds). He was the No. 1 pick of the 1985 draft out of Georgetown University.

He played his final year with the Magic when he averaged six points and four rebounds during the 2001-02 season.

Van Gundy, who replaced Brian Hill as the Magic head coach, declined to comment specifically on his staff, which he is close to finalizing.

"We're almost done, but there are a few things to finish,'' he said.

Ewing can't be coming here. Not yet. This is still Herb Williams turf.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

That would almost be like Mattingly getting the job over Girardi. He doesn't deserve it as much and hasn't got the experience.

We have good assistants. Why bring in Ewing and **** up the stability of our coaching staff. If Zeke gets fired then its a different story.

Damn I liked seeing Ewing front row and center last yr. He came to alot of our games. His face was priceless when Curry dunked on Bosh.
