John Lucas, who makes a living working with players like Sean Williams, was much more forthcoming. He has been handling Williams on a daily basis for the last two months and feels he has a good handle on the 20-year-old.

"Sean doesn't have any real-life issues," Lucas says. "There are other guys I've had here who have had real-life issues. He doesn't. His issue is, he just wants to smoke some weed sometime -- and you can't. We're learning how to handle life issues without smoking weed to medicate. I would venture to say, he hasn't smoked any more weed than a lot of the other guys who are going to get drafted. The difference is, he got caught. Now, the question is, do you have an addiction? That's another issue. If it's worth it to you, if you have to have it, then you have an addiction, because look at what you've lost. If it's not worth it to you, then we're on our way. And I think he's more than on his way."

So is it safe to say guys who hang out with John Lucas has some sort of substance abuse problem.... Penny hardaway, Steve Francis etc... thoughts

IMHO thats just a generalization. It doesn't mean every player that he trains has a substance abuse problem.

I saw one mock that has him dropping to 24th. The mock has us picking up Freshmen Shooting Guard Daequan Cook, a 6'-6", 203 pounder. They say he's a good outside shooter. Thomas says if he had stayed in college, he might have been a lottery pick later on. We'll see.
I'll never trust this' team again.

Thomas is not the only person who says that about Cook. It is stated on nearly every mock draft, that Cook could be a steal this year because of his potential.

True though--Cliff Robinson was a well-known dope smoker at uconn 20+ years ago. I think he was caught twice in the league--but he also kept himself in premium shape and was a tough, productive quality player who was one of the most reliable players the league has ever seen. Obviously he was able to keep his vice within reason. I dont think Sean will do the same--atleast it doesnt sound like it.

Over the last two months, Williams has become "a 9 to 5" guy in Houston working with Lucas. The day begins and ends in the gym, with Lucas running the drills. There is time set out in the middle of the day for weightlifting and drug counseling.

Speaking of dope smokers, I've always wondered why Herb Williams was never caught. Is he old enough to have avoided drug tests? Do they not test bench warmers over 40? In addition to a first hand report, I've noticed that when other players are joking around with Herb, they emphaze Herrrrrrb and kinda wink.

It's dumb, IMO, for the league to be so intense about pot. It's pretty clear that a lot of players, a lot of pretty good players, are pot heads. If their conditioning is off, well, they pay for it on the court, why bother to regulate it? Seems to me that a don't ask, don't tell, and don't smoke pot in the gym/locker room/bus policy would do the trick.

You can buy a vaporizer and not even inhale smoke into your lungs. There's no conditioning issue then, unless you hit the munchies afterwards.

Williams already showed how much he treasures his weed. He chose it over his college career and risked a ridiculously high paid career in the NBA.
