Neither Kirk Hinrich nor Ben Gordon is necessarily a true point guard, but it’s not likely the Bulls would look to fill that position with the No. 9 pick of the June 28 NBA draft.

Ohio State freshman Mike Conley Jr. didn’t let that apparent lack of need deter him on Saturday when he performed a solo workout at the Berto Center.

“I love the city of Chicago, love the Bulls,” Conley said. “I don’t assume anything. I have no idea where I’m going to get picked. So I’m taking all precautions. I’m working out for teams that I feel I could have a good chance of being drafted.

“After watching (the Bulls) I noticed their style of play is really up and down, really guard-oriented. Their guards do a lot of work, they get their teammates involved a lot and are very unselfish. I like that about the team.”

The 6-foot-1 Conley’s draft status is tough to predict. He could go as high as No. 3 to Atlanta or still be around when the Bulls select ninth. Every team from 3 to 7 can list point guard as a potential need.

Asked to compare himself to another player. Conley chose the recently named MVP of the NBA Finals.

“I’d probably have to say right now Tony Parker is the best comparison,” he said. “Pretty much the ability to penetrate, get into the lane at will, create plays offensively by himself. I feel like I do a lot of similar things.”

If Conley does last until the ninth pick or beyond, one rumor has Portland interested in trading for another first-rounder so it can match Conley with center Greg Oden. Those two players are good friends and were teammates in high school, college and AAU.

“That would be wonderful to play with him again at the next level, but it’s not necessarily a goal,” Conley said. “We understand, coming to this level, we might have to split up. That’s the risk we have to take by going to the NBA, so we weren’t planning on playing together again.”

Technically, Conley hasn’t signed with an agent. But both he and Oden will be represented by Conley’s dad, Mike, who came along for the trip to the Berto Center.

Mike Conley Sr. is the former Olympic triple jumper who won a gold medal in 1992. He grew up in Chicago and attended Luther South High School, but now lives in Indianapolis.

I think Conley is so overrated. If he didnt play beside Oden he would not be getting this recognition

I dont know how it translates in to the NBA but in college I saw Conley having more effect than Oden often. He ws a very good college guard

Tony Parker plays with Tim Duncan.

Has anyone besides me noticed that?

Tyronn Lue would look like a star player playing with Timmy Duncan

You can not downplay Tony Parker's ability. Tony parker is a beast. There aren't many ppl that can guard him. He is 6'1 and can get to the basket any time. Plus he got a jumper now. I think we all seen what he did to the Cavs ( I think he was the Finals MVP, I stopped watching because that series was torture to watch). Comparing him to Tyron Lue is ludicrous.

Tony Parker is a great player with or without Tim Duncan. Way too many people write him off because of Duncan. Guarding him is near impossible some games. How do you keep him out of the paint with his combination of speed and handle?

Parker isn't a great player. Dude stop.

And I wasn't comparing him to Lue -- I was simply stating Lue would shine while playing with Duncan.

Define Great. Did he just play great in the nba finals? Did he play as great or greater than every other player in those finals? Is he one of the 5-10 greatest pgs in the todays nba? Was he the greatest points in the paint scorer in the nba 2 seasons ago? Has his teams always had great records while he has been a starter? Does he have one of the greatest combinations of speed and handle in the NBA? Was he great enough to be chosen to play in the last 2 all star games by the coachs?
How many pgs shoot 52%fg and 55%fg in 2 consecutive seasons? Is that a great fg% for a pg?

At his size, is anyone worried he'll be another Jason/Jay/Jason Williams?

Some highly acclaimed small guards dominate (Iverson, Paul, Nash)... but his less-than-idea height is another question mark on him beyond his lack of history of playing w/o Oden.

which one of those guys above showed you what Conely does at 19 yrs of age. Iverson was drafted #1 overall and paul is nice too after that none of the above shined at this young age.

Conley's coming to the pros at an early age of 19, Parker played pro ball overseas at 16 yrs of age.

Parker just now developed a jumpshot at 25 yrs of age and after 5 yrs in the Association, do the math.

Now look at the genes he comes from

Superstar potential genes

More worried about his outside shooting than his height.

When he does that without playing with Duncan and the Ginobili, then call me.

AI was GREAT. Jason Kidd was GREAT. Nash is GREAT.

You stat whore.

I did not realize that Jkidd and Steve Nash played without other good players. Have Marion and Amare not been All Stars? What about Carter and RJ?

Ai has always been much more a SG than a Pg and I doubt the Spurs would consider AI over Parker

Um tell me if I'm wrong but don't AI, Nash and Kidd have better stats than Parker. One thing they don't have is 3 Championship rings. Maybe if you put Parker on a team where he has to do more like the Sixers, the Nets, and the Suns his stats increase. I would take Parker over AI.

Very good point. The Spurs think team first. They dont care about gaudy stats
