If you look at the last 20 years of #1 picks in the draft
(excluding the last 2 cuz it's too soon to tell), it's interesting that
only about 1/2 of seem in retrospect to have been legitimate picks.
Not saying necessarilly that they were the best player in the draft,
but a definite franchise type player that shouldn't be second guessed.

Who was the last pg under 6'0 to be picked #1 before Allen Iverson?
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

oooh, @ Joe Smith. That hurt Golden State for a long time. He wasnt good at all. At least people knew going in that Kandi was a suspect pick.

I would argue that injuries subdued Daugherty and Manning. I think those two would be pretty good superstars if not for those injuries. You could make the same argument for Martin and the fact that he was in a weak draft. Coleman never live up to his potential but for a couple of seasons he was one of the best PFs in the league and a former all star. Kandi man and Ellison are up there for two of the worst # 1 picks. I would take Kwame Brown over them. Very good topic.

Ellison could definitely ball. Injuries slowed him too. At least he showed flashes. Joe Smith was supposed to be a 20-10 guy and he just flat out couldnt play. The minute he stepped on the court, people knew he was a mistake. Its crazy that scouts who are being paid that much, could be so wrong.

Glenn Robinson was the wrong choice in retrospect over JKidd and GHill but he averaged 20 ppg for his career.

Painful cause they took Joe Smith over Sheed, KG and McDyess...all better PF's tha Smith.

Kandi man was a weird one- they weren't talking about his a no.1 untill the week right before the draft. That draft was hard to figure. Dirk was a Euro bigman before Euro big men were cool. Vince Carter was probably considered the best talent in that draft, but he was overshadowed a bit by his teammate Antwan Jamison and was still pretty raw. People still saw him as a risk.

Rashard Lewis, Cat Mobley, Ruben Patterson, Rafer Alston, Greg Buckner (and Jerome James) all taken in rd.2 of that draft.

I agree with the Coleman thing. He definitely COULD have been that franchise guy.

I wouldn't want Robinson as the cornerstone of my franchise.

Unless we're talkin' Burger King franchise
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

When was the last time there was such a hotly contested debate over who would be the #1 pick. Not because there was not a front runner, but because their were two such phenomenal talents as Oden and Durant?
Anyone?
