From the Boston Herald (thanks I Heart KG):
Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge acknowledged yesterday that he has talked with the Minnesota Timberwolves about a potential trade for Kevin Garnett.
However, Ainge refused to comment about a published report that had the Celts shipping Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and the fifth pick in next week’s NBA draft for the All-Star forward.
A league source confirmed the teams have talked but are not close to a deal.
That deal is an absolute steal for the Wolves. So it’s probably nothing more than a rumor…it sucks, because that trade would completely turn this franchise around.
Here’s what would happen: The Wolves take Corey Brewer at #5 and Joakim Noah at #7. Then, they use Theo’s expiring contract to make a big signing in the 2008 offseason. Also, Al Jefferson, at age 22, is already on the brink of becoming an all-star caliber big man.
Add in the Wolves’ current nucleus of promising young talent: Foye, McCants, and Craig Smith. That would be insane…they’d be contenders in two-three years, and would continue to be a major factor in the West for many seasons.
Hey, we can dream, right?
Elsewhere, here’s the big question as we head towards draft day: Do the Wolves really intend to take Spencer Hawes, of all people?
According to Andy Katz, the answer is no. In a recent live chat on ESPN.com (sorry, don’t have the link), he basically stated that Hawes wouldn’t have struggled with the decision to leave school if the Wolves had indeed promised to take him. Makes sense.
They’ve got to stay away from Hawes at #7…give me Corey Brewer, Jeff Green, or Al Thornton. But if the Wolves absolutely must take Hawes, how about dealing #7 to Philly for #12 and #21? -------------------------------------------------------------------- Imagine that deal for the Wolves and the picks that the guys projected. Noah/Jefferson/Brewer/Davis/Foyle Blount/Howard/Green/MCcants/Jaric
Thats starting 5 looks real good on paper.
