the east is wide open.

if you're a team with a legitimate player in his prime (like pierce, marbury, kidd, jermaine, etc), do you cash in on most of your youth to try to get another star player to make a serious run at the east title?

or do you proceed on the slow burn and try to rebuild? note: every other team in the east is doing the same thing so by the time you get good, so may the rest of the east.

you're an eastern conference gm, what would you do?

The problem with the East is that it is so young. Look at the Raptors, Magic, Hawks, Bobcats, Celtics, and Knicks for example. There are not many experienced players on these teams right now. So you go through your little playoff drought until the develop and get better instead of trying to get an allstar type player in his 30's that probably has 2-3 good more years left in him.

right, but if everybody is young and developing, then unless you have a breakout young talent, you'll be in the same boat as everybody else 3-5 years down the road, no?

right now, it looks like the majority of the east is in rebuild mold...looking towards the unknown.

would it be prudent for a team to try to cash in and get 2-3 solid deep playoff runs (and somewhat chance at a title) or play a game of magic 8-ball for the future?

you probably have to decide if you have your franchise player on your roster. if it's a matter of waiting for dwight howard (are there any other ones in the East?), then keep stockpiling assets. if not, go for the best guy on the market and try to win.

Magic 8 ball for the future. It all depends on if you have a solid plan. Look at the Spurs. They built a team from scratch by adding piece to piece and now they have a dynasty. I feel the Raptors are going to be the powerhouse in the East because they did the same thing. Utah Jazz are another team. I am not saying not to try and get great player additions on your team. I am saying get young great player additions on your team. Like Utah signing Boozer and Okur, both still young. I am all for it if the player is not over 30.

I think you get another star on your squad and give it your best shot.

My thing is, you are always rebuilding until you win the title. Look at Dallas. They didn't look to add anything significant or try to get guys there that improved what they were trying to do. Iverson was available and Cuban was very arrogant to say he and his team wasn't interested. They should have tried to get iverson. Iverson would have showed up against golden state. Only a team like san Antonio has the luxury of just reloading their role players. They also aren't nieve because they turned guys like Mario elie, Avery, Daniels, Stephan jax, etc into Parker, gino, Finley, Barry, etc. They reload and get better. Guys get old and retire? The get a new savy vet to step right in. Dallas hasn't won anything so they can't do that yet.

As far as the east, I tell you what you don't bring in wally z to play with paul pierce. boston has their shooting guard and point guard for the next 15 years. They need to upgrade the front court next to Jefferson. Matrix, gasol, Jo, garnett, etc. They can get those guys. Danny needs to wake up.

Isiah has tried to get guys but is an unlucky mofo. Even still isiah has the ability to get that vet to play with marbs. He also has the ability to move some guys and keep building with youth.

Isiah said himelf that you can't keep all your youth. You will eventually have to sign someone long term. So isiah needs to keep making moves while leaving him the option to go the other way.

Is making moves a method to built the team according to the plan or just method to show that GM is doing his job?
And the answer is evident with the result.
Some GM's built a TEAM and some just... reputation
