Billups Likely To Remain In Detroit
10th June, 2007 - 3:01 pm
Denver Post -

Both Newspapers reported last week the Pistons are expected to offer Chauncey Billups a four-year contract starting at about $13 million per season. Joe Dumars, Pistons president of basketball operations, strongly stated to The Denver Post via e-mail last week that he has no plans of losing Billups.

"Chauncey is our No. 1 priority this offseason and we have every intention of re-signing him," Dumars said.

I said 5yrs/$65mil pretty close, that's going to set them back if they don't unload Wallace for something. Oh well they have no other choice at this point.

He let Wallace go to re-sign Billups.

What do he look like losing both players?

He has to sign Billups.

pistons are at a delicate point in their franchise.

they are like a tweak or two away from winning another title.

or they can begin to blow it up and try to rebuild.

it will be interesting to see what they do.

yeah, but prior to letting wallace go, he traded darko to re-sign wallace.

if atlanta or milwaukee get retarded and come after billups with a 5/6 year offer, what does dumars do?

Dumars is a smart man. The pistons run could stand losing Ben, they won't if they lose billups.

He deserves 60 for 4 years after what has done for them.

Darko wasn't going to break the bank. That can't be right.

That's why they traded Darko last year for Cato and a pick. Dumars though he didn't need Darko.

he wasn't going to break the bank but he would be getting a contract starting in the $7-8 mil range. the plan was to re-sign both ben and chauncy and they couldn't also afford darko (especially after the sheed trade and darko's asking price).

he offered ben 4 years $48, chicago offered more and dumars couldn't engineer a sign and trade.
now if someone goes nuts and offers a ton at chauncy, how can he say no after coming off a regular MLE deal?

dumars is in a little bit of a predicament...unless chauncy gives them a discount OR nobody goes after him.

Yes, dj

Judging from what you say,m it does appear that Dumars is in quite of a predicament with Billups. And I can't even say that another team won't up and offer Billups a stake in their team because nowadays, I have just about seen it all.

But Dumars is a smart cat, so therefore I think he will do what is best for the Pistons.

With that, no one can be mad at him whatever transpires.

if i were Dumars i would rebuild that franchise now, not laden it with big contracts of aging players... Big Ben is gone, Sheed is on his way out... that squad has run it's course IMO... Hamilton & Billups are still 1 of the best backcourts in the game, but you have to figure until they rebuild that frontcourt, they really have no realistic shot at winning any more championships.

They should have kept Big Ben. Once they let him go, their championship hopes were over and they should have started rebuilding.

I'd re-sign Chauncy. Piston's might not be the best team in the league but they are one of them, such that an injury, a hot streak or a couple of calls is all that stands between them and the Finals. It takes so long to get to that point, but once you're there you've gotta ride with that, especially with everyone in good health. An argument could even be made all they really need is a better bench and/or coach.

That said, when Dumars tells us signing Chauncey is his highest priority I can't help but remember him saying the same about Okur and Ben. This stands to be a wild off-season around the league. Anything can happen.

Yeah, that's what I say. Offer him $13 or $14 mill a season for 4 years. IMO Billups is only worth maybe $11 million a season. He is probably the 5th or 6th best pg in the league. If you say to him, we will pay you max but only for 4 years, I think he will take that deal. Billups should have at least 3 good years left in him, so you will get most of you money's worth and you can trade him in the last year. A 5 or 6 year deal will set the Pistons back.

But not that damn much! they owe themselves and the fans not to handcuff the franchise with an aging player and a gigantic deal...

That's what I was saying the last time we talked about this.

If they re-sign chancey what do they do to actually improve the team? Do they trade prince? Do they sign someone to a mid-level? Trade sheed?

In my opinion, they should reload now. Let chancey sign elsewhere and trade sheed. Sign Mo Williams to mid-level and trade sheed to a team that can give back the most youth.

I know dumars wishes he had darko still. Hey, maybe he can trade sheed to Orlando for darko and others, Lol.
