Nuggets guard Smith, unidentified passenger hospitalized after SUV crash
Associated Press

MILLSTONE TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Denver Nuggets player J.R. Smith and another man were seriously injured Saturday when the sport utility vehicle Smith was driving collided with a car.

Smith and the unidentified passenger were ejected from the SUV in the crash, which occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Stagecoach Road in Millstone Township, said Sgt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman.

The passenger -- who had serious head wounds -- was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune, while Smith was taken there via ambulance.

Further details on their injuries were not immediately available Saturday night.

Smith's vehicle apparently went through a stop sign, Jones said, and collided with the other car. The driver of that vehicle and two other people in the SUV were injured and taken to CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, but their injuries were not considered serious.

The 21-year-old Smith was a star player at Lakewood High School and St. Benedict's Prep in New Jersey. He averaged 13.0 points in 63 games this season.

Hot damn. Sorry to hear that. DJ do you know the extent of Smith's injuries. Sounds like Demarr Johnson's accident. I think Demarr said he was asleep when he went through the stop sign or red light. I hope everything works out for him.

ESPN.com's Andy Katz spoke with Nuggets front office executive Bret Bearup, who told Katz that the Nuggets have spoken to Smith. Bearup said that while Smith sustained bumps and bruises in the accident, his injuries are not life-threatening.

Anyone who gets ejected from a car means they weren't wearing a seat belt. Stupid!

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Crash may net tickets for Nugget Smith

Nuggets guard J.R. Smith may face several traffic violations when the investigation into his Saturday crash in New Jersey is completed, authorities said Sunday.

Smith, 21, was driving a 2003 GMC sports utility vehicle southbound on Stillhouse Road in Millstone Township, N.J., when he drove around a vehicle that was stopped at a stop sign in front of him, according to a report issued by the New Jersey State Police.

As Smith continued into the intersection, his SUV was struck by a Jaguar driven by 49-year-old Lynn Sinatra, also of Millstone Township, authorities said.

Sinatra was traveling westbound on Stagecoach Road at the time and the state police say she had the right of way.

Smith's SUV overturned on impact and he and Andre Bell, 21, who was riding in the back, were thrown out of the vehicle.

Bell, of East Orange, N.J., was flown to Jersey Shore Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Smith was treated and released from the hospital this morning.

Another passenger, 23-year-old Carroll Marshall of Chicago, Ill. was taken by ambulance to CentraState Medical Center with minor injuries.

Sinatra, who only suffered minor injuries in the crash, was also taken by ambulance to CentraState Medical Center.

Staff writer Felisa Cardona can be reached at 303-954-1219 or at fcardona@denverpost.com.

He drove around a vehicle stopped at a stop sign? This accident was totally avoidable.

I was happy but surprised to see that he was not hurt. Like JohnWallace44 said, to get ejected from a car and not get seriously hurt is a miracle. Someone has been praying for him.

SUVs turn over folks. They suck.

And, not wearing your seat belt is really moronic.

Is this young man not one of the dumb ones or what?

jr smith was the driver. his passenger didn't wear a seatbelt.

who's responsibility is that? the driver or the passenger?

then jr smith violates driving rules and gets into a crash.

you have to think that it may result in involuntary manslaughter at the least, right?

Passenger was in the backseat and over 18. JR is not responsible for him wearing a belt.

I am sorry to hear that the kid died. It is traumatic for his family and JR, who apparently was his best friend. Unfortunately, with a death, JR might be facing some criminal charges, but we really want know until the police determine exactly what happened. It was 5:30 in the afternoon and they were coming from the barbershop, so hopefully no alcohol or drugs were involved.

Whatever the law is, the driver should buckle up and tell his passengers to do so as well. If the driver doesn't buckle up, the passenger is probably less likely to do so. , especially at that age.

This is very sad.
