renaldo balkman:

strength: energetic and can move as fast as anyone. excel on the fast break and can finish, maybe one of the best finishers on our team. rebounds well and can start the break with a good outlet pass. starting to develop a decent jumpshot. maybe our best weakside shotblocker and defender on our team and cause problems with his athleticism and wingspan. provides a moral boost with his energy play and demeanor. a fan favorite.

weakness: his jumpshot was better than we thought but still not good enough for a sf. his handle is decent on breaks but besides that can be shaky. his emotions can get the best of him and be turnover prone ( but that is most of the team too). must be better offensively and develop a "go-to" move.

He had a very good rookie season. The question is, as always, what happens next? He seems like the kind of player who will work hard, but working hard doesn't always mean he develops a good jumper. Last season, he proved he belonged in the nba. The next two/three seasons will show what level he'll reach.

Good assessment. He really just needs to work on his shooting from the perimeter and the free throw line. I don't even think he needs a fadeaway jumper or anything like that. He just needs to be able to hit open shots (like a Bruce Bowen). He also needs to learn to study his opponents. He has the potential to be a lockdown defender, but to get to that level requires not only the physical tools but the preparation to know what your opponent is likely to do. As you said, his handle is good in the open court but is only decent in a halfcourt setting, so he needs to work on that. But with the energy that he plays at, he is going to win alot of games for us in the coming years.

I'd also give him an A-. You have to factor in what the expectations for him were. He's not some high profile pick in the lottery. He still made an impact this year when given a chance to play. He was a plus player. He brought energy to our defense and we needed that.

I happen to think he can develop his shot. Often his shots were in range, but just off to the left or right. He looks a whole lot better than Ariza looked when he was here and even Ariza has begun to shoot the ball better. He just needs to get more reps in and refine his form. He only attempted 27 3's and that's not enough to really get a feel for the shot. Hopefully in time he'll get it worked out.

I'd give him an A- considering his hustle, his d and where he was picked. I'm not optimistic about his developing a good jump shot. He had good form when he came into the league and that was after four years of college ball. Also, he doesn't shoot free throws very well. All this adds up to a guy who doesn't have the touch to shoot well.
