From the Knicks perspective:

With O'Neal we get a polished post threat who can block shots with the best of 'em, in his prime, plus a playmaking (NYC) PG in Tinsley (who some felt we should have drafted) to pair with Marbury in the backcourt, having Jamal come off the bench. Davis may have a bad rep, but he gives us someone who can score consistently at the 3 for a season, with Sprewell-like numbers in terms of FG percentage, assists and rebounds. Plus he only has one year left on his deal, making him either movable later, or come off the cap. Speaking of which the Knicks in this trade then get rid of two of their arguable worst contracts in Francis and Jeffries, despite losing Curry and Frye.
