it seems point differential is a better indicator of team success. now, if we look at the teams in the +/- 1.0 differential:

these teams seem to be really close to either taking a step forward (45+ wins) or taking a step back (<40 wins). and that difference can be either adding/subtracting a player, or incremental development of the players already on the team.
looking at all the other teams, it looks like it would require a significant change in personnel or a big time leap in current player development for those teams to make a big jump.
